CFP: First Conference on Global Indigenous Studies (CGIS 2024)

Conference description: Throughout the world, ethnic minorities and Indigenous people have strived to protect their rich heritages and linguistic characteristics against colonial powers, expanding nation-states, as well as the homogenizing forces of globalization. It is increasingly being recognized, exemplified by UNITED NATIONS' “Indigenous Languages Decade” (2022-2032) (https://en.unesco.org/idil2022-2032), that Indigenous languages and the epistemologies embedded in them are fundamental for the perseverance of biological and cultural diversities. The protection and promotion of linguistic diversity help to improve the human potential, agency, and local governance of native speakers of endangered languages, which is especially critical in the face of climate change and environmental degradation. 

The First Conference on Global Indigenous Studies (CGIS 2024) is a multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary event that will bring together national and international scholars, educators, practitioners, students, policy makers, activists, academic institutions, Indigenous organizations, governmental and non-governmental organizations. The participants in this conference will be involved in a local and global dialogue and exchange of ideas, research, and experiences on the themes of the event.

Concept Note
The PAN-NIT Research Conclave on "Humanities at the Crossroads: The Convergence of Technology, Language, and Literature" seeks to explore the dynamic interplay between traditional humanities disciplines and emerging technological advancements. This conclave aims to provide a platform for intellectual exchange, interdisciplinary dialogue, and collaborative exploration among scholars, researchers, and students from 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) across India.
In today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, the boundaries between technology, language, and literature are becoming increasingly blurred. The infusion of technology into humanities disciplines has opened up new avenues for analysis, interpretation, and expression, revolutionizing traditional approaches to scholarship and creative endeavors. This conclave aims to critically examine the challenges and opportunities presented by this convergence, exploring its implications for pedagogy, research, and societal engagement.

The PAN-NIT Research Conclave on "Humanities at Crossroads: The Convergence of Technology, Language, and Literature" promises to be a stimulating and enriching forum for exploring the transformative potential of technology within the humanities domain. By fostering interdisciplinary dialogue, promoting ethical reflection, and embracing innovative pedagogical practices, this conclave aims to empower scholars, researchers, and students to navigate the complex intersection of technology, language, and literature in the digital age.

Objectives of the Research Conclave

Call for Papers: Special Issue on “Kindness in Higher Education: Fostering the Human(e) Element of Teaching and Learning” - Journal of Applied Learning & Teaching (ISSN 2591-801X) (Academic Journal - Special Issue)



Introduction

The Journal of Applied Learning & Teaching (JALT) is pleased to announce a forthcoming special issue on “Kindness in Higher Education: Fostering the Human(e) Element of Teaching and Learning”.

This issue aims to explore the essential aspects of Garrison’s (2016) Community of Inquiry model, with a specific focus on the three forms of ‘presence’: social, cognitive, and teaching. We seek to investigate how these elements play a pivotal role in fostering productive and meaningful learning experiences in diverse higher education settings while embracing and nurturing the humane aspect of education.

Theme and Scope
As the landscape of higher education undergoes a transition back to full on-campus, online, and hybrid teaching environments, the challenge of cultivating purposeful pedagogies, enhancing student engagement, and implementing authentic assessment methodologies becomes ever more critical. This special issue is designed to synthesise contemporary research, insightful analysis, debates, and provocations centred around the theme of fostering humane, socially present learning environments.


Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
  •  Social presence and learning outcomes: Exploring the impact of social presence on student engagement, collaboration, and learning outcomes in various higher education settings.
  •  Cognitive presence and pedagogical strategies: Investigating the relationship between cognitive presence and effective pedagogical approaches that promote deep learning and critical thinking.
  • Facilitating teaching presence in hybrid and online settings: Examining the role of teaching presence in hybrid and online courses, and its impact on the quality of instruction and student learning experiences.
  •  Authentic assessment techniques: Presenting innovative assessment methods that align with authentic learning experiences, promoting a deeper understanding of course content.
  •  Humanising learning environments: Discussing strategies for creating inclusive and empathetic learning spaces that value and respect individual learner identities and experiences.
  •  Student perspectives on social and cognitive presence: Inquiring into students’ perspectives on the importance of social and cognitive presence in their learning journey.
  •  Leadership in higher education and learning environment design: Analysing the role of institutional leaders in fostering socially and cognitively rich learning settings.

Submission Guidelines

We invite submissions from teaching practitioners, academic scholars, leaders in higher education, and graduate research students. Manuscripts should be original and unpublished works adhering to the JALT’s guidelines for authors and the article template.


Please ensure that your submission addresses the theme and scope of the special issue. All manuscripts will undergo a rigorous double-blind peer-review process to ensure the highest quality and relevance of the published articles.

Human Rights, Language and Culture: Advancements in Contemporary Times

Concept Note

Humans and their constant strife for emancipation, physical or psychological, has been a major sculptor for social and individual relations throughout history. This struggle extends beyond the absence of immediately apparent restraints and encompasses the freedom to think, express oneself, and exercise one's rights. Today, human rights discourse acknowledges the significance of both physical and psychological well-being as a fundamental aspect of human rights, as is enshrined in various international declarations and conventions. It implies that restrictions on these freedoms, whether through censorship, discrimination, or cultural norms, infringe upon a person's human rights.

Language and culture serve as powerful tools contributing to both communication and cognitive development to further human rights discourse. Discrimination or suppression of languages can lead to the restriction of thought and expression. Recognizing and protecting linguistic diversity ensures individual freedom and access to cultural heritage. Cultural practices, traditions, and norms also have the potential to foster or impede mental freedom. Contemporary advancements in human rights discourse involve challenging cultural norms that infringe upon individual freedoms, such as gender-based discrimination or restrictions on freedom of expression within specific cultural contexts and reconciling communal diversity with human rights principles.

The intersection of human rights, language, and culture bears significant relevance in an increasingly globalized contemporary world. In a world characterized by increasing intercultural connectivity and diversity, the study and promotion of human rights in various cultural and linguistic contexts becomes of paramount importance. This conference aims to provide a platform for scholars, activists, and practitioners to explore and discuss the advancements, challenges, and innovations related to human rights, language, and culture in contemporary times. We invite submissions investigating this shared ground between fields of human language, literature, communication, and cultural studies. Below is a prospective but not exhaustive list of relevant topics. We encourage a broad range of abstracts not limited to the list below.

Language rights and linguistic diversity.

Language barriers and integration challenges in a multicultural society.

Indigenous languages and cultural heritage.

The importance of legal documentation in regional languages for cross-cultural accessibility.

Representation of the human rights discourse through visual culture like movies, cartoon strips, songs, and graphic narratives.

Explorations of nationalism through depictions of Civil services, armed forces, and Swadesi industries in Indian literature.

Constitutional language in a globalised world.

Narratives of public employees.

Gender, identity, and human rights.  

Human rights and migrant experience.

Human rights and processes of its linguistic interpretation.  

Linguistic and cultural exchange in diaspora communities.

Narratives centred on constitutional accessibility.

Multilingual education and inclusive pedagogies.

Effective policy advocacy for linguistic and cultural rights.

Explorations of citizen rights discourse in Indian Literature.

 

 

Interested scholars should submit a 300-word abstract with the paper’s title and a brief biographical note of 100 words to nationalconference2024_clc@sgtuniversity.org by December 10, 2023. We shall revert to selected abstracts by December 16, 2023. Selected scholars shall have to submit full papers 3000-4000 words in length (formatted according to MLA 9th edition) by January 10, 2023.

The mode of the conference shall be flexible. All presenters and participants shall be conferred with certificates. The conference proceedings shall be published in book form. Kindly pay the applicable registration fee at the QR code appended with this file.

Call for Book Chapter Proposals: Chosen, Bestowed, Acquired, Assigned: Names and Naming in Youth Literature (Proposal deadline: July 15, 2023)

    Just as names are among the first and most basic means by which we order and make sense of our world, so too do names in works of literature help readers order and make sense of created worlds. Moreover, names in literature often connote more than they denote. This edited collection will consider how names, depictions of naming practices, and explorations of name theory in youth literature can enrich our understanding of created worlds and, by implication, of our real world. For the purposes of this collection, we draw on the Children’s Literature Association’s conception of literature as “books, films, and other media created for, or adopted by, children and young adults around the world, past, present, and future" (https://www.childlitassn.org).

    Chapters proposed for this volume might address names, naming, and name theory in youth literature of any media and/or modality, from any perspective, and using the analytical tools of any discipline. From the names of places, people, animals, and plants to the monikers of fairies and goblins, cyborgs and droids, any type of name from any time period or from any language is welcome. Please see the American Name Society’s glossary of naming terminology (https://www.americannamesociety.org/names/); this CFP can be viewed on the ANS site, as well. The primary works examined may be fiction or non-fiction. The only subject-matter stipulation for submission is that the primary intended reading audience of the piece(s) of literature investigated must be youth (i.e., children, adolescents, and/or early adults). 







The following is a partial list of possible topics, but we also welcome being surprised by other pertinent suggestions. 

•    Names as chosen, bestowed, acquired, assigned, or self-selected 
• Naming practices, rites, rituals, and regulations and their implications
•    Literary devices or linguistic mechanisms used in creating names and their implications
•    Questions of unnaming and renaming of people, places, and things
•    Questions of names and identity, self-hood, and socio-cultural connection
•    Names as constructions of normal vs. abnormal, good vs. evil, acceptable vs. anathema 
•    Theoretical frameworks for analyzing names in youth literature and media
•    Challenges and strategies for translating names
•    Names of the non-human, inhuman, mechanical, and systemic and their implications
•    Names in galaxies far, far away and in subatomic systems
•    Names as markers of political, ideological, historical controversies
•    Nonsensical names and/or memetic names and their implications







Proposal Submission Process 
•    Abstract proposals (max. 500 words, excluding the title and references) should be sent as a PDF email attachment to Dr. Anne W. Anderson (YouthLit2023@gmail.com).
•    For organizational purposes, the proposals must include “YOUTHLIT2023” in the subject line of the email.
•    All proposals must include an abstract, a title, and a preliminary list of references.
•    The full name(s) of the author(s) and the author(’s’) affiliation(s) must appear in the body of the email. These details should NOT appear in the attached proposal.
•    In the case of multi-authored submissions, one person must be clearly identified as the primary contact. 
•    The DEADLINE for proposal submissions is July 15, 2023. All proposals will be submitted to a double-blind review process. Authors will be notified about acceptance on or before September 15, 2023. 
•    Final chapters (max. 7,000 words, excluding abstracts and references) will be due March 15, 2024.

I.M. Nick holds a BA (Germanics), BSC (Clinical/Abnormal Psychology), MA (German Linguistics), MSc (Forensic and Investigative Psychology), as well as a PhD and the German “Habilitation” (English Linguistics). Her research areas include forensic linguistics, Holocaust Studies, slavery, and onomastics. She is the President of the Germanic Society for Forensic Linguistics, a past President of the American Name Society, and the current Editor-in-Chief of NAMES.


Anne W. Anderson earned a B.A. in Creative Writing (Eckerd College), an M.A. in Journalism (U. Alabama), and a Ph.D. in Literacy Studies/Education (U. South Florida) as well as a Graduate Certificate in Qualitative Research Methods. Her research areas include critical studies of children's and young adult literature (all media) and developing methods of multi-modal document analysis. She is a member of the Children's Literature Association, is the Allied Conference Coordinator for the American Name Society, and is an independent researcher/scholar.

Call for papers - Humanities and social sciences in an interdisciplinary perspective






We warmly invite you to submit papers (chapters) for the next volume of the peer-reviewed group monograph entitled "Humanities and Social Sciences in an Interdisciplinary Perspective". Texts from all disciplines included in the humanities and social sciences will be eligible for publication, after the manuscript has been positively reviewed beforehand. If you have any questions as to whether a given paper would fit into the theme of the publication, you are welcome to contact us directly.

The call for papers is continuous - the papers are submitted for review immediately after receipt, and thus, once the minimum number of papers has been collected, by the decision of the editor-in-chief, a given volume may be closed and submitted to the publisher for publication. Subsequent submitted articles will be included in the next volume.

We guarantee publication (one or more volumes) by 30 September of this year at the latest.

Both students, postgraduates and academics may submit their texts. They may submit any number of texts - the same fee is charged for each additional text.

Language of texts: Polish, English, German, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Ukrainian, Russian (it is possible to publish a text in a language other than the one indicated, but this will involve obtaining new reviewers, which may lengthen the editorial work slightly).

After submission, papers will be submitted for one blind-review. After a negative review, the editors reserve the right to reject the text or, after the author has made adjustments, to submit it for another review.

It will be the authors' only task to submit the paper (including summary and keywords) in the form they have prepared. Technical editors will prepare papers to editorial requirements.

Cost of text publication: 80 EUR (including: open access digital publication on the website of the publishing house on the list of the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education, cost of editorial work). The fee is charged only after a positive review.

It is possible to issue an invoice or a pro-forma invoice with a deferred payment date (especially in the case of obtaining funding for the publication from the university or reimbursement for it).

All certificates (e.g. of acceptance for publication) will be issued in electronic form.

 ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
ADVED 2016-2nd INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADVANCES IN EDUCATION AND SOCIAL SCIENCES will be held in Istanbul (Turkey), on the 10th, 11th and 12th of October 2016 is an interdisciplinary international conference that invites academics, independent scholars and researchers from around the world to meet and exchange the latest ideas and discuss issues concerning all fields of Education, Social Sciences and Humanities.
ADVED 2016 provides the ideal opportunity to bring together professors, researchers and high education students of different disciplines, discuss new issues, and discover the most recent developments, researches and trends in education and social sciences.
Academics making efforts in education, subfields of which might include higher education, early childhood education, adult education, special education, e-learning, language education, etc. are highly welcomed. 
Due to the nature of the conference with its focus on innovative ideas and developments, papers related to all areas of social sciences including communication, accounting, finance, economics, management, business, marketing, education, sociology, psychology, political science, law and other areas of social sciences; also all areas of humanities including anthropology, archaeology, architecture, art, ethics, folklore studies, history, language studies, literature, methodological studies, music, philosophy, poetry and theater are invited for the international conference.
Also academic presentations in the fields of theoretical, experimental, and applied Social Sciences and Humanities are highly welcomed.

Submitted papers will be subject to peer review and evaluated based on originality and clarity of exposition.

OFFICIAL LANGUAGE
The language of the conference is English (Papers in Turkish are also welcomed). Simultaneous translation will not be provided.

SUBMIT YOUR ABSTRACT
You are invited to submit your abstract proposal (only in English) to contribute to ADVED 2016 (in person or virtually) with your experiences and projects in the areas of education or social sciences. 


PUBLICATIONS
1.  All the accepted full papers are going to be published in the Abstracts & Proceedings CD-ROM (e-book) with an ISBN number and will be given to the participants on the conference day.
2. Participants also will be able to reach and download the Abstracts & Proceedings E-publication from OCERINT's online e-library (http://www.ocerint.org/index.php/digital-library) web site.
3. ADVED 2016 Abstracts & Proceedings will also be included in Google Scholar and sent to be reviewed for their inclusion in the ISI Conference Proceedings Citation Index.
4. NEW!!! The accepted papers (depending upon their author’s wish) will also sent to be reviewed for publishing in one of our peer reviewed online International journals with an ISSN number (IJAEDU- International E-Journal of Advances in Education  and  IJASOS- International E-journal of Advances in Social Sciences) which are also sent to be reviewed for their inclusion in the ISI Citation Indexes.
