The main idea of the conference is to create a platform for multidisciplinary discussion of the contemporary role of women in various dimensions of social life, taking into account diversity of cultures, religions, legal and socio-economic opportunities in different areas of the world.

Analysis of manifestations, determinants and barriers of women’s activity is a subject that should have its place in the scientific discourse, especially in terms of the European Year of Active Citizenship. As this multidimensional phenomenon should be approached from an interdisciplinary perspective, we would like to invite researchers and practitioners dealing with contemporary role of women and issues such as respect for others, freedom, equality, solidarity and human rights.

The conference encourages multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary research initiatives. To emphasize multicultural dimension of the conference the guests speakers from different countries are being invited. Therefore, we hope that our project will also become a platform for an exchange of experience and practice. Aside the scientific significance of the conference, we hope that our analysis and discussions will also result in the process of integration of women’s dimensions and will be reflected in the programs of social policies. All accepted papers will be published in printed bilingual conference books/proceedings in English and Polish.
Yours sincerely,

President of the Scientific and Organization Committee

CFP: Film Asia 2013 - The Second Asian Conference on Film and Documentary

Call for Papers

FilmAsia 2013 Conference Themes:

1) Social Media and Responsibility; Globalization and Internationalization

As technological innovations and advances have created an ever-growing media net, and where lines have become increasingly blurred between users and consumers, questions of media accountability continue to be a constant source of discussion. Media organizations around the world are becoming increasingly socially, ethnically and culturally diverse, both as a consequence of globalization and in response to internationalization. Social media has infused itself in the lives of every young person in the developed world today. And the types of social media that we use are ever growing, evolving and changing. The way we communicate has also changed dramatically moving further away from face-to-face communication. This theme looks at how social media has been used increasingly within films, storylines, and around film and film production, marketing and distribution.

2) Connectedness, Identity and Alienation
Being connected through social networking sites has become an accepted form of communication in today's digitalized world. People can spend hours a day talking on mobile phones, on Skype, or on the Internet, which gives the impression that we are a more connected world than ever before. And communication is lauded. Because of the massive information flow we can call ourselves perhaps the most connected age in history. But is this connectedness, however, real or illusory? Quantity of communication does not guarantee quality. For example, to many sensitive people, when they call a number and hear the words "Please listen to the following options" the sense of connectedness suddenly becomes alienating. The crude mechanics entailed can make people feel suspicious, isolated, and even threatened by an invisible structure they cannot penetrate. A raft of serious existential issues arises out of this. What impact does this have on the self whose identity in the time/space continuum, in the rapidly changing environment, and in these manufactured structures, depends for its development on interaction with perceived reality? What becomes the definition of the human? And what of the awareness of the transcendent in the human spirit from which ethics and aesthetics depend for their existence? Far from being questions of the present moment, these are parameters that will dominate the central problem of human self-understanding as we progress further into the uncharted waters of a highly uncertain future.

The Asian Conference on Film and Documentary encourages sessions within and across a variety of disciplines and fields related to Film and Documentary, including:

Film Direction and Production:  Film Criticism and Theory

Film and Literature: Artistic Correspondence
BiographyFilm HistoryDocumentary History
Archive-Based StudiesFilms and Digital Distribution (Use of the Internet and video sharing)

We welcome submissions in the above streams, and propose the following three optional conference themes that have been designed by the conference organizers to inspire research possibilities. The themes are designed to elicit a wide variety of interpretations as avenues of research.

IMPORTANT: Authors as Reviewers: A Reciprocal System
Our academic events would not be what they were without a committment to ensuring adherence to international norms of abstract peer review. IAFOR relies on a large number of international scholars from around the world to contribute to a shared vision of promoting and engaging in international, intercultural and interdisciplinary dialogue, and if you are taking part in an IAFOR event, then that means you.

As all authors have had their work reviewed by at least two reviewers, in the spirit of reciprocity, similarly we ask that all accepted authors be prepared to review up to three abstracts. If your abstract has been accepted then we will usually contact you within a week with the assignation of up to three abstracts, and ask that you try and review these abstracts within one week.

One Day Symposium:Edward W. Said: Public Intellectual, Cultural Critic, Activist.

2013 marks a decade since Edward W. Said passed: on 25 September 2003, the world lost a leading public intellectual, cultural critic, activist, fighter, and scholar's scholar. Said is a major figure whose work has had a tremendous impact in various disciplines and fields of study in the Humanities. Rich, multilayered and finely textured, Said offers numerous concepts, tactics, and modalities of intervention that serve us well in understanding, challenging and over-turning dominant power, subject-constituting regimes, and forms of identity-politics. He teaches us what the purpose and aim of the intellectual is. In his own words,  “the intellectual … is neither a pacifier nor a consensus-builder, but someone whose whole being is staked on a critical sense, a sense of being unwilling to accept easy formulas of ready-made clichés, or the smooth, ever-so-accommodating confirmations of what the powerful or conventional have to say and what they do. Not just passively unwillingly, but actively willing to say so in public” (from Representations of the Intellectual). As Tariq Ali notes, ‘his voice is irreplaceable, but his legacy will endure. He has many lives ahead of him’.
In this spirit and as a tribute to Edward Wadie Said, the Department of Media, Film & Communication, University of Otago, New Zealand, will be hosting a one-day symposium. We invite contributions from any field to discuss various aspects of Edward Said’s work.
We strongly encourage postgraduates and early career researchers to be part of this event.
Please send a 250-word abstract and a short bio to said-conference@otago.ac.nz by 1 August 2013.
Professor Vijay Mishra, Murdoch University, Australia, will deliver the keynote address.
The event is free of cost. There will be no catering support (many restaurants are located within close walking distance of the symposium venue). Coffee and tea will be made available throughout the day.
For non-presenters, we would greatly appreciate it if you could RSVP to mfco@otago.ac.nz by 20 September 2013.

CFP: Centenary of Indian Cinema: Aesthetics, Economics, and Politics

Centenary of Indian Cinema: Aesthetics, Economics, and Politics
University of Otago, Dunedin, NEW ZEALAND
3-4 October 2013
The year 2013 marks the centenary of Indian cinema. On May 3 1913, Dadasaheb Phalke screened the first Indian film Raja Harishchandra at Coronation Theatre in what was then Bombay. Today, Indian cinema is, undoubtedly, a global transnational cultural industry — in terms of output and reach, and in terms of the multifaceted relationships to social, economic, cultural, political, ideological, aesthetic, and institutional discourses. It is a significant cultural industry that plays a central role in articulating fundamental modalities of inscribing subjectivities — gender, sexuality, nationalism, caste, class, religion, ethnicity — played out within specific historical moments and fields of power. Further, it should be noted that Indian cinema is a heterogeneous assemblage that includes, in addition to mainstream regional Indian cinemas, documentary films, parallel cinema, short films, digital films, amateur films and those made for the festival circuit. It has, in that regard, numerous countenances. Indian cinema is also radically dispersed in terms of contexts of appearance (airplane screens, computer screens, multiplex halls), fluidity of movement between different media technologies (online movie portals, television and DVDs, mobile technology), and the superfluous integration with other commodity forms (animated films, game art, IPL, and so on). The dispersal of Indian cinema specifically, and cinema more generally, also demands that we ask how do people engage with cinema, how is cinema experienced in the age of media convergence. In short, Indian cinema is a mobile assemblage that interacts with or carries out interactions with other media-systems, popular cultures, bodies, institutions, forms of lives, communities, and urban and industrial developments.
Additionally, the study of Indian cinema has bourgeoned and opened an entirely new field of scholarship, challenged the discipline of Film Studies, set up new courses within University Departments, and fostered a healthy critical intellectual community. This body of scholarship has had a tremendous impact, not only in terms of making visible Indian cinema to academia, but of cultivating a culture of taking Indian cinema seriously as a significant cultural object for scrutiny. That said, this body of scholarship must urgently address the changing media landscape. This is a landscape marked by convergence, multi-platform delivery and consumption circuits, and diverse modalities of production. The Indian film industry is now a multi-billion dollar business and employs thousands of actors and technicians. Hence its commercial and human resource aspects cannot be neglected either. This existing body of scholarship must therefore address questions of how might we ‘study’ Indian cinema beyond the domain of representation. Have we exhausted all options? What is the future of this cinema? Are the theoretical and conceptual approaches and trajectories that inform this body of scholarship sufficient? What new theoretical and conceptual engagements must this cinema be connected to? How do we evaluate the economic impact of this film industry, both inside India and outside, as increasingly Indian films are shot in foreign countries, including New Zealand?
At this critical juncture of Indian cinema’s history and a rapidly changing mediascape, it is time, we believe to reflect on and debate Indian cinema: its pasts, present and future; and its possibilities, potentialities, and limits. We invite papers on any aspect or topic relating to Indian cinema. Please send an abstract (250 words) and a short bio to the following email address (Indian-Cinema@otago.ac.nz) by 1 August 2013.
The keynote addresses will be delivered by Professor Vijay Mishra (Murdoch University, Australia) & Associate Professor Ranjani Mazumdar (JNU, India). There will be other specially invited speakers.
The conference will take place at the Dunedin campus of the University of Otago under the auspices of the New Zealand India Research Institute, which has just been established as a consortium of seven New Zealand universities to promote Indian studies in the country.
The conference organizers expect that the paper presenters will seek funding from their own institutions.
Conveners
Dr. Vijay Devadas, Department of Media, Film & Communication, University of Otago.
Dr. Sita Venkateswar, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Massey University
