The English language has played a crucial role in shaping the Indian psyche since the early 19th century and impacted the intellectual, social, economic and cultural domains of the nation. It continues to impact Indian society even today, defining concepts like development, modernity and literacy. Further, it has serious consequences for employability, media, culture, and the academia. A Study of the ways in which English has impacted our thinking and the conceptual and pedagogic manifestations it has had in varied fields have been some of the concerns of recent research in the field of English Language studies (ELS) in India.

This conference would provide a platform to discuss and deliberate some of these issues. Specifically, it generates thinking and research on language policy and planning, curriculum development, multilingual education, Indian English, and use of English in India. The focus will be on the ontological, epistemological, axiological and methodological issues and challenges.

The ideas generated through critical discussion and deliberation in the conference will help explore future research possibilities in the field of English Language studies. This first Research Scholars Conference from the Centre for English Language Studies (CELS) intends to explore the scope of ELS as a discipline in India.

We welcome papers from research scholars on the following areas:

Call for Papers

The Gender, Translocality and the City Research Group at the University of Debrecen is pleased to announce its second annual conference, which is going to explore the role of gender, fantasy, and emotion in the production of urban space. Papers focusing on urban fantasy in twentieth- and twenty-first-century anglophone literary, visual and cultural studies are invited for presentation, and we also encourage submissions relying on psychogeographical approaches to explore the (post)modern imaginary of city life. Papers investigating the modern(ist) city, postmodern labyrinths, art and the aestheticization of urban space, the playable city, uncanny metropolises, paranormal urban worlds, suburban and subterranean space, spectral cities and fantasy scapes, for instance, are welcome. Presentations addressing "the mutually defining relation between bodies and cities" (Elizabeth Grosz) will be considered as well, especially if focusing on the "atmosphere" (Teresa Brennan) or "sense of place" (Jon Anderson) as the articulation of affective traces which define subjectivities in relation to specific environments. We also encourage submissions on topics such as transgressions, fear, and the city; metamorphoses, enjoyment, and urban space; emapthy and the city; and so on.Theoretical contributions investigating the intersections between affect theory and city studies, including, but not limited to, the works of Sarah Ahmed, Elspeth Probyn, Carolyn Pedwell, for instance, and Michel De Certeau, Elizabeth Wilson, Elizabeth Grosz, etc., are also within our scope of interest.

We particularly welcome submissions exploring gendered readings of the following themes:

Advanced MA and PhD students are warmly encouraged to submit abstracts to present papers in regular sessions, and the conference also aims to provide an opportunity for them to discuss their research projects related to the theme of the call (dissertation proposals, chapters, articles, etc.). Graduate students are invited to organise 60-minute or 90-minute roundtable discussions and workshops with 3-4 participants. Please submit a 400-word proposal about the issues to be discussed, including the format you would prefer, and a 300-word summary of the role of each student in your group (for instance, moderator, respondent, etc.).

Notification of acceptance: 15 February 2017.

Selected papers will be published in a thematic issue of the Hungarian Journal of English and American Studies, a peer-reviewed journal listed by the MLA and available on ProQuest and JSTOR.

Comparative Literature: At the Crossroads of Culture and Society

Concept Note

‘Comparative Literature’, ‘culture’, ‘society’ – these terms have been used frequently in contemporary academic discourses that stem from the drive towards “interdisciplinarity” without addressing the tools to map the available reference points within a particular socio-cultural milieu. Our focus in this conference is to examine the inter-relation of these concepts from the perspective of comparative studies in literature(s) and culture(s). 

The development of Comparative Literature in India and elsewhere as an academic discipline has been continuously shaped by certain socio-political events, like Bangabhanga, World War II, Cold War, (to name a few). These events are linked with socio-cultural phenomena like “multiculturalism” (Bernheimer, Comparative Literature in the Age of Multiculturalism), “globalization” (Saussy, Comparative Literature in the Age of Globalization), as well as disciplines/concepts like Cultural Studies, Translation Studies, World Literature and – perhaps the latest – Comparative Cultural Studies. Does Comparative Literature mean merely comparing two texts from two different socio-cultural milieus? What is the value of language as a sign system and as a creative tool, in such an Endeavour? Ina multilingual situation, how can language as a major socio-cultural index (beyond oral/written) become a significant point of departure in understanding the negotiations mentioned above, is our primary concern. 

The conference seeks to delve deep into this anxiety and explore the precise links – if any – between the practice of Comparative Literature and the location of the practitioner. Do the needs of the comparatist influence the means and methods and if so, how? As a practice, Comparative Literature opens itself to such internal questions and we would like to explore the relations between the different ways of practice and their locations – comparing the comparativism that arises in different locations. 

If Comparative Literature as a perspective allows itself to “change”, ‘comparativism as an ethics’ allows us to take into our pedagogy and our practice its commitment to understanding the other with the humility and the willingness to change in the face of difference. Difference in language to start with and then extending our “understanding” around, gender, caste, class, ethnicity, religion, location and many more. Standing at this historical conjuncture, we feel the need to bring this discussion to bear upon both disciplinary expectations and “interdisciplinarity”. 

We invite focused and analytical papers which would address these theoretical complexities and enrich our understanding of the points of intersections between Comparative Literature and culture/ society.

Submission of abstracts: 

Abstracts (300 words, maximum) of papers, related to the broad theme of the Conference, are invited from students/ scholars/ teachers of Comparative Literature. 

Authors should mention clearly their name and affiliation and the title of the paper. The broad areas mentioned are only suggestive. Presentation time will be 15-20 minutes.

Please note that we will be unable to consider abstracts received beyond these dates. Abstracts can be in Bangla, English, Hindi, Assamese, Odia, Marathi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Urdu, Santhali, Indo-Tibetan, Russian, Italian, French, German, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese. 

If selected, participants will have to translate their abstracts (where relevant) and subsequently papers, into English for circulation. All abstracts will be sent for double-blind peer-review and selected participants will receive an acceptance letter by January 30, 2017. In order to participate in the conference, the selected scholars will have to send their complete papers by February 15, 2017. 

Registration: On receiving the acceptance letter, participants should send a demand draft in favour of the Accounts Officer, Visva-Bharati by February 15, 2017.

Best Paper Award to Students at the Conference (TWO)

Since 2015, the Comparative Literature Association of India has been offering two prizes at its annual conferences, one for the best paper presented by an MA student from any literature discipline, and one for the best paper presented by a research student at the M. Phil and Ph D level in Comparative Literature. Participants under the age of 35, registered for MA, M. Phil and PhD courses in Indian and foreign universities are eligible to compete, provided:

(1) They indicate their desire to compete when submitting the abstract.

(2) Submit proof of studentship along with the abstract.

Once notified that their abstract has been selected for inclusion in the conference programme, MA, M. Phil and PhD students wishing to compete must submit the complete paper within the date mentioned above. Six papers (three from each category) will be shortlisted for presentation at a special session of the conference. Selection of shortlisted candidates will be on the basis of blind review of papers received by an expert committee. Final selection of two best papers will be on the basis of the papers received followed by the presentation of the shortlisted papers at the special session.

Transport: Nearest rail station to Santiniketan is Bolpur, and nearest airport is Kolkata international airport. Participants who want pick up from Bolpur station should inform the date and time of their arrival by February 25, 2017.

“Mass Media and Modern Indian Culture”

There are a number of examples of mass media being financed and controlled by individual private enterprises or political parties. Because of the sheer amount of money filtered to these institutions by this affluent class with vested interest, they create programmes to suit their political motives and design their presentations in a way that catches the public eye. It is observed that these mass media institutions become subservient either to the propaganda of a particular political party or to the selfish motives of an influential individual/ individuals instead of catering to the idea of common good. As a corollary, the welfare of the many gets blurred by the profits of a few. Hopefully, this seminar will be effective in highlighting the ways in which the various sections of the society can contribute to change this status quo. The following issues will be specifically discussed in the seminar—

History, Culture and Identity: Australian Studies in India and Australia

How are Culture, identity and history re-shaped or re-interrogated in a cosmopolitan and globalized world order? In a world dominated by global political economy and new challenges of hegemonic ascendancy, it seems difficult to accept monolithic formations of history, culture and identity. History is being continuously re-written in terms of the discovery of new regimes of locational or regional priorities. This in turn redefines the overarching frame of culture and identity. In other words, the epistemic variables of cultural, political and economic ideologies bring about new modes of articulation.

Since the 70s of the last century, there has been a gradual renewal of cross-cultural linkages between Australia and India, beginning with a gradual and unabated flow of Indian migrants to Australia. This leads to the formation of various Bengali/Gujrati/Punjabi cultural societies and even Bengali/Hindi language schools in Melbourne and Sydney. The Bengali Association of Victoria (BAV), based in Melbourne, is largely responsible for establishing a meaningful cultural relationship. Gujrati Societies or Punjabi Associations have also been established along similar lines. Specific programs such as Literary Commons! (Monash University) – which brings indigenous from both countries together through their storytelling – and TRAMJATRA (RMIT) - interlinking Melbourne-Calcutta tramways - may also be regarded as significant markers of this growing cultural relationship. In Australia, the Australian Government organized such events as Utsav Australia or Indian Art Exhibitions (Museum Victoria) from time to time, thereby continuing this trend of cultural exchange.

In Kolkata Book Fair, Australia was honoured as the “Guest of Honour Country” (2006) and the “Focus Country” (2007). Moreover, Australian Government’s decision to open Uranium sales to India has brought the two countries closer in defence and security sectors. On cultural and literary fronts, the role of Australia India Council has further negotiated the formation of new establishments in terms of cultural exchanges.

Such transactions have generated new perceptions of both countries, thereby recognizing commonalities and differences: commonalities in the context of regional proximity, British colonialism, participation in World Wars, shared linguistic legacy etc; and differences in terms of settler history, configurations of Aborigine or indigenous history, cultural clashes etc. Such commonalities and differences may help us to discover new discursive strategies to locate evolving patterns of history, culture and identity of two distinctive role players in the Asia Pacific region: Australia and India.

This international conference welcomes Australian and Indian scholars from across disciplines to disseminate their ideas on how Australia and India can build a greater understanding of each other in terms of historical, cultural and strategic relationships.

Calling all postgrads and early career researchers!

Following the success of our 2016 Symposium, the Gender and Sexuality Cluster of the South West and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership is pleased to announce the upcoming interdisciplinary conference on the theme of ‘Gendered Voices’. Taking place on 18th/19th May 2017 at the University of Bristol, we invite submissions from all postgraduates and early career researchers (including postdocs) from SWW DTP-affiliated universities (Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, Aberystwyth, Bath, Bath Spa, Southampton and Reading).

We welcome submissions from any discipline, as we aim to bring together researchers from across the academic spectrum to discuss different perspectives on gender, sex, sexuality, and the body. The theme ‘Gendered Voices’ could include, but is not limited to:

●     Voices of protest

●     Gendered expression, e.g. through theatre, performance, and song

●     Literary voices; art and literature as a mode of communication

●     Voices in history

●     Unheard/hidden voices

●     Voices of authority; in the law, hierarchies, domestic spheres, etc.

●     Virtual voices/ online identities

We will accept both twenty-minute papers and ‘flash paper’ sessions with five minute presentations, where researchers can present a research problem, reflections on their work or a short summary of their thesis. We invite you to submit abstracts to genderandsexualitycluster@gmail.com by Tuesday 31st January.

For a twenty-minute paper please submit a 250 word max. abstract, and a 100 word max. abstract for a flash paper. Please include your name, department, university and position in the email, as well as the type of paper you are submitting. We will reply to all applicants by Monday 29th February. General registration will open in March. Attendance is free and lunch and refreshments will be provided.

We hope that the day will spark productive and engaging discussions across disciplines and we look forward to meeting you all!
