Conference on Feminist & Gender studies in a global perspective:Interdisciplinary & International, February 8-11, 2018 Pondicherry, India

FEMINIST & GENDER STUDIES IN A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE:

CONCEPT NOTE:

   Since the early 1980s when a number of feminists, including Chandra Mohanty in her essay “Under Western Eyes” urged critics to examine the interplay of the local and the global and to expose the power-relations – both historical and contemporary – in discussions of postcolonial and global feminisms, there has been an increased emphasis on understanding “global feminism” through the intersecting aspects of race, class, gender and through colonialism and anticolonial forms of nationalism. Of late, emerging feminisms and gender studies as interconnecting disciplines, have tried to incorporate the pluralities,temporality and constructedness of all identities in a shifting discourse of changing power and resistance. Identity politics based on such precarious foundations are undermined even more by the rise of nationalism. But the query is how global feminism and gender studies can, continue to offer their valuable critiques given the rise of new nationalisms across the globe, nationalisms that threaten the formation of cross-border collectivities and alignments? And might the growing class, ethnic, and religious tensions within nations impede the solidarity that global perspectives regarding feminist and gender studies seek to forge? Who gets to set the framework for these debates, and which perspectives are elided when we fail to take into account the positionality of the critic? Can global perspectives on feminism and gender alter perceptions of masculinity and male gender? Similarly, in a changing global scenario, how and where do we place indigenous/aboriginal/subaltern women’s narratives and how do new alignments of nationalism represent LGBTQ and sexuality? Finally how does the global become personal? Are there feminisms of everyday life that can address or attend to the larger global issues that construct gender and sexuality? The aim of this conference is to re-view and re-frame these and related questions from a wide range of disciplinary and multidisciplinary fields, such as literature, philosophy, history, sociology and so on.

1st International Congress on Local History: Concept, Practices and Challenges in Contemporaneity- 28 and 29 September 2017, Portugal

Organisation: Institute of Contemporary History FCSH/NOVA

Venue: Cascais Cultural Centre

When: 28 and 29 September 2017
Deadline for proposals: 15 June 2017

Since mid-nineteenth century, local history has aroused the interest of historians and researchers who study the past of a particular region or community with the purpose of restoring their collective and individual memories. At the scientific level, this reality is manifested in the multiplication of master and doctoral thesis on themes related to local history, fostering innovative knowledge and giving birth to a new wave of historians interested in working on such topics.

The 1st International Congress on Local History proposes to create a space of interdisciplinary sharing and reflection, valuing the importance of local history in contemporary historiography, through a critical approach to the concept and opening a debate around research methodologies and practices. Contributing to problematize several issues inherent to a theoretical-methodological consideration, in the contemporary period, this initiative intends to promote an effort for the confluence of visions and solutions that hopefully will help to overcome everyone’s difficulties.

Call for Papers
The opening of this call for papers for all interested in this subject pretends, in addition to the dissemination of local and regional historical studies, to stimulate an attempt to understand the challenges and obstacles met by researchers as well as the creation of an international network involving all those who work in this area.

Proposals for communication on local history in the contemporaneity can be conceived around the following thematic axes, without excluding others correlated:

Theory and methodology of local history;

The role of local cultural associations;
The importance of local history in high school and University curricula;
What does this subject means and represents;
Themes and works involving the history of a region (18th-20th centuries);
Municipalities and Wars.

This call for papers invites the submission of 250/300-word proposals for communications (including title) in Portuguese or English, with a short biography of the author (maximum 100 words). Communications accepted will result in 15-minute presentations.
