Contemporary Research Studies are no longer bound to one discipline only. To have a holistic idea of the entire phenomena of study under question has seen the need of drawing concepts and ideas from various disciplines. These major transformations exhort the need to come up with events that encourages such kind of interdisciplinary studies. The concept of interdisciplinary studies has been practiced since ages but the concept of Interdisciplinarity is an upcoming and well accepted discipline. 

Currently, many Universities and institutions have started focusing on the concept of Interdisciplinarity. The ever increasing number of interdisciplinary researchers displays a sign of development as new ideas, concepts and methods are added to the storehouse of collective knowledge. However more so than the area of research, what are more captivating are the methods or approaches employed while conducting the research which by the way differs not only from one country or university to another but even from one scholar to the other who are otherwise united by one objective. The focus of the proposed conference is to examine and evaluate interdisciplinary research areas. The themes to be focused on are interdisciplinary research areas under the scope of Humanities, Social Sciences and Management Studies. 

Authors/Research Scholars willing to present papers in the conference are required to forward their abstracts to coin.hss@nitm.ac.in 

The abstracts should be limited to 200 words with 5 keywords and should include: title; author(s); affiliations; research aims; key arguments/findings.

 The submitted abstracts will be scrutinized by a committee of experts. Modifications in the abstracts will not be accepted after the last date of submission.

International Seminar & Workshop on Anglo-Indian Studies (4-5 August 2017)

 Theme: “Midnight’s Orphans”: Problematising the Postcolonial in the Telling of Anglo-Indian (Hi)stories 

by 

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences Indian Institute of Technology Madras. 

The compelling contrast between the ‘Midnight’s Children’ and the ‘Midnight’s Orphans’ has been used in multiple contexts to highlight what/who have been left behind/left out in the Postcolonial scenario. Pertinent questions in this regard have already been asked and continue to be asked in studies related to literature, culture, gender and society. This seminar cum workshop is an attempt to locate the scholarship on the Anglo-Indian community within the broad canvass of Postcolonial Studies thereby allowing an interdisciplinary and transnational approach towards the understanding of the Anglo-Indian in India and the diaspora.

This is particularly significant in the contemporary period when Anglo-Indians are variously identified as, on the one hand, victims of the postcolonial condition, and on the other, as the ‘first modern Indians’ (Sealy 2007) and well positioned to take advantage of their considerable capitals, including their English language competency and access to excellent education. The idea for this workshop originated with the realization that the Anglo-Indians and their stories need to be re-looked at from a more nuanced perspective that is not restricted to particular disciplines, genres and theories. This seminar cum workshop provides a forum for discussion relevant to the Anglo-Indian situation, informed by other relevant scholarship on marginal as well as local histories. The World Anglo-Indian Day that falls on 2 August gives an appropriate context to foreground these discussions.

 Call for Papers 

To collaborate with this academic initiative, we invite original research papers that are focused on Anglo-Indian studies from disciplines such as Literature, History, Anthropology, Sociology, Culture Studies and Film/Media Studies. DAAD Helmut-Schmidt Scholarship Programme 2018 (Fully funded to Study in Germany)

Deadline:  July 31, 2017 Location: Germany Overview: This programme is designed to further qualify future leaders in politics, law, economics and administration according to the principles of good governance and to prepare them in a praxis-oriented course for their professional life. Very good graduates with a first university degree get the chance to obtain a master’s degree in disciplines that are of special relevance to the social, political and economic development of their home country. The knowledge and experience acquired in Germany should enable the scholarship holders to later contribute to the establishment of democratically oriented economic and social systems aimed at overcoming social differences. In addition, the training at German institutions of higher education should qualify the scholarship holders to become partners in the political and economic co-operation with Germany. With this programme, DAAD intends to contribute to the support of good governance and civil society structures in selected partner countries and regions. Who Can Apply? The scholarship scheme is open to graduates in the field of social sciences, political sciences, law, economics and in public administration from Africa, Latin America, South Asia and Southeast Asia, from countries in the Middle East as well as from the Ukraine . What is Fundable: The scholarships are awarded for selected master´s courses at German institutions of higher education listed below. The study programmes starts in September/October 2018. The courses have an international orientation and are taught in German and/or English. Prior to their study programmes all scholarship holders receive a 6- months-German language course from April 2018 to September 2018. The language courses take place at selected institutes in Germany and not at the universities of the selected master´s courses. The language course is compulsory also for those who attend a master´s course taught in English. The scholarship holders are offered a special tutoring at their host institutions financed by DAAD. Furthermore, there is the possibility to attend networking events. DAAD pays a monthly scholarship rate of currently 750 €. The scholarship also includes contributions to health insurance in Germany. In addition, DAAD grants an appropriate travel allowance and a study and research subsidy as well as rent subsidies and/or allowances for spouses and/or children where applicable. DAAD scholarship holders within the Helmut-Schmidt-Programme are exempted from tuition fees. Requirements: The main DAAD criteria for selection are the following: the study results so far, knowledge of English (and German), political and social engagement, a convincing description of the subject-related and personal motivation for the study project in Germany and the expected benefit when returning to the home country. The latest university degree should have been obtained during the six years prior to the application for the scholarship. Applicants cannot be considered if they have stayed in Germany for more than 15 months at the time of application. All master´s courses have further additional requirements that must be fulfilled by the applicants in any case. Application: Applications have to be submitted in German or English. Please indicate that you are applying for the DAAD Helmut-SchmidtProgramme (Master’s scholarships for Public Policy and Good Governance). FEMINIST & GENDER STUDIES IN A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE:

CONCEPT NOTE:

   Since the early 1980s when a number of feminists, including Chandra Mohanty in her essay “Under Western Eyes” urged critics to examine the interplay of the local and the global and to expose the power-relations – both historical and contemporary – in discussions of postcolonial and global feminisms, there has been an increased emphasis on understanding “global feminism” through the intersecting aspects of race, class, gender and through colonialism and anticolonial forms of nationalism. Of late, emerging feminisms and gender studies as interconnecting disciplines, have tried to incorporate the pluralities,temporality and constructedness of all identities in a shifting discourse of changing power and resistance. Identity politics based on such precarious foundations are undermined even more by the rise of nationalism. But the query is how global feminism and gender studies can, continue to offer their valuable critiques given the rise of new nationalisms across the globe, nationalisms that threaten the formation of cross-border collectivities and alignments? And might the growing class, ethnic, and religious tensions within nations impede the solidarity that global perspectives regarding feminist and gender studies seek to forge? Who gets to set the framework for these debates, and which perspectives are elided when we fail to take into account the positionality of the critic? Can global perspectives on feminism and gender alter perceptions of masculinity and male gender? Similarly, in a changing global scenario, how and where do we place indigenous/aboriginal/subaltern women’s narratives and how do new alignments of nationalism represent LGBTQ and sexuality? Finally how does the global become personal? Are there feminisms of everyday life that can address or attend to the larger global issues that construct gender and sexuality? The aim of this conference is to re-view and re-frame these and related questions from a wide range of disciplinary and multidisciplinary fields, such as literature, philosophy, history, sociology and so on.

Registrants at The Sahitya can participate in only one session.  The Sahitya’s International Conference on Feminist and Gender Studies in a Global
Perspective encourages the following types of submissions:

• Research Papers: Completed research papers in any of the topic areas listed above or related areas. (15 min presentations followed by Q&A).
• Round Table: Short presentations on any of the themes stated above (5 minute presentations). Session is open to conversation and debate between participants and the audience.
• Panels of Work-in-Progress Reports or Proposals for Future Research: Incomplete research or ideas for future research in order to generate discussion and feedback in any of the topic areas listed above, or related areas. (10 minute presentations).Only for Research scholars.

FORMAT OF PRESENTATIONS:

• Research Paper sessions will consist of three 15 minute presentations and a 5 minute Q & A time in a 60 minute session. The session will be divided equally between the presenters.
• Round Table would be limited to 30 minute presentation with a maximum of 4 presenters and 10 minutes discussion time.
• Panel sessions will provide an opportunity for five presenters to speak in a more open and conversational setting with conference attendees. Each participant will have 10 minutes for presentation.
• Submissions for any of the sessions should include the name, department, affiliation, and email address in addition to a description of the presentation and the title page.

SUBMITTING A PROPOSAL/PAPER:

Before making your submission keep the following ready.

• Title of the submission (be sure to use proper capitalization)
• Topic area of the submission (choose a topic area from the list at the top of this page)
• Presentation format (choose one: Paper session, Round table, Panel session)
• Abstract of 300 words
• Email Address (all acceptance/rejection letters are sent noted through the abstracts portal.
• Registration would open on JULY 31, 2017 (Monday)

DURATION OF THE CONFERENCE:

The conference would begin on 8th February evening (Thursday) at 6 pm and close on 11th morning (Sunday) at 11 am. A local trip is arranged on 11th
afternoon at 12 pm. Those interested may look up the trip information.

• Notification for selected paper-presenters: July 16, 2017 (Sunday)
• Opening of Registrations July 31, 2017 (Monday)
• Closing of Early Bird registration: October 15, 2017 (Sunday)
• Opening and Closing of Second Registration: October 16, 2017 (Monday) and November 18, 2017 (Saturday)
• Opening and Closing of Third registration: November 19, 2017 (Sunday) and December 1, 2017 (Friday)
• Opening and Closing of Final Registration: December 2 (Saturday) upto December 10, 2017 (Sunday)
• Conference dates: 8-11 February, 2018. (Thursday evening- Sunday noon)
