The annual two-day conference of the Society for Pirandello Studies aims to embrace a wide variety of methods and approaches to Pirandello's œuvre, and to bring together theatre professionals, critics and scholars representing a range of disciplines. Both in-person and online/from-home 20-minute papers are welcome. This year's conference sheds light on Pirandello's awareness of colonialist/nationalist hegemony and its relation to more recent practices of (fiction/theatre) storytelling. Possible topics include but are not limited to:

Pirandello's work critiquing war and fascism despite his formal membership to the latter;

Pirandello's theatrical and literary representation of national and ethnic identity/-ties;

Pirandello's uncovering of colonial discourse & hegemony at play in the north/south and mainland/island (Sicily) cultural narratives;

Pirandello's metafiction: narratology, theory and practice;

Pirandello's influence on later theories of metafiction;

Metafiction and neighbouring categories, such as Romantic mise-en-abyme, the absurd, and the grotesque;

Characters in twenty-first-century literature, cinema, and other media;

Authorship, umorismo, and gender;

Metafiction and authorship across disciplines, including sociological, psychological and anthropological perspectives.

Concept Note

The three-day international young researchers’ conference on New Research in English Studies from 26 to 28 April, 2023 (Hybrid Mode) intends to stimulate the cross-pollination of ideas in the spirit of NEP, 2020. 

This Conference will 

a) provide research scholars a forum to present their research ideas b)help them receive feedback on the choice of research paradigm, hypothesis, andmethodology, from experts 

c) facilitate discussion on recent trends in English Studies and

The Midwest World History Association is pleased to announce a call for paper, poster, panel, roundtable, and workshop proposals for its annual conference to be held at Roosevelt University in Chicago, Illinois on September 22-23, 2022. The conference theme is “Outcasts, Pariahs, and Criminals: Histories of Others and Othering.” This theme builds off of last year’s “Difficult Histories” by highlighting the histories of and by those who have been othered. As many political leaders move to “shield people from feeling ‘discomfort’ over historic actions by their race, nationality or gender,” this theme is intended to invite presentations and discussions on how world historians at all levels – high school, community college, or university - can best create spaces within which to explore, share, teach and learn about contested topics. This year’s theme is also a recognition of the change in federal law that once again makes incarcerated citizens eligible for Pell grants and the hopeful increase of educational opportunities for those most impacted by the carceral state. As always, while designed to spark discussion, the conference theme is not intended to limit possibilities: paper and panel proposals on any theme and time period in world history are welcome. Similarly, proposals that focus on teaching and those that showcase research are equally encouraged. The MWWHA seeks to bring together college and K-12 faculty, and welcomes proposals from K-12 teachers, college faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, high school students, and public historians, as well as scholars and teachers working in allied fields.

This conference will be held in person at Roosevelt University in Chicago’s South Loop.

Questions about the conference can be directed to MWWHA's public discussion forum on its site, or you can email the conference chair at chair@mwwha.org. Where a complete panel of papers, roundtable, or workshop is proposed, the convener should also include a 250-word abstract of the panel theme. Individual paper presentations should be planned to last no longer than 20 minutes.

The MWWHA will offer up to three competitive Graduate Student Awards to help offset travel costs. Graduate students interested in applying should include a letter with their conference proposal explaining how the conference helps them with their studies, teaching, and/or future career plans as well as how their paper fits with the conference theme and the mission of the MWWHA.

We also invite accepted papers to be submitted to our journal, The Middle Ground Journal, for potential publication: http://themiddlegroundjournal.org/. Extra consideration will be given to papers for a special issue of the journal based on the conference theme.

The Department of Childhood Studies and the Gender Studies Program at Rutgers University- Camden invite proposals for “The Girl in Theory,” a virtual symposium to be held March 29-31, 2023.

This symposium invites exploration of what it means to theorize through and with the girl and the category of girlhood. Well beyond the boundaries of “girlhood studies,” the girl often lurks where she is not an explicit subject of inquiry. As a figure enmeshed in processes of racial capitalism, colonialism, and carcerality, how might the girl inform visions of, and struggles for, transformation and liberation? In joining ongoing critical conversations in the field of Black girlhood studies and beyond, the symposium seeks to position critical girlhood studies as a viable field that has much to offer contemporary modes of thought and inquiry.

This symposium centers critical conversations on the generative tensions and future possibilities of scholarship on girls and girlhoods. What does it mean to invoke “the girl” as the central subject of research and inquiry? In an ever-shifting landscape of gender politics that push beyond binary categories and narrow identities, what does the category of “the girl” have to offer critical research? How are scholars attending to shifting definitions of “the girl” and “girlhood”? And how might these generative tensions push the field of girlhood studies in new, critical directions? These are the questions “The Girl in Theory” will explore.

Some themes this symposium seeks to investigate:

(Re)defining the “girl” / challenging the bounds of girlhood

Racializing, queering, transing, and cripping girlhoods

Possibilities of indigenous and transnational girlhoods beyond the legacies of colonialism

Semiotics, affect, and aesthetics of girlhood (appropriative, sexualized, or otherwise)

Girlhood as it (dis)appears in history, media, literature, or art

Girlhood in public institutions (carceral, educational, governmental) and processes

Futures of Girlhood Studies as a field or discipline

This inaugural Critical Girlhood Studies Symposium will also serve as the launch for the Girlhood Studies Collective, a new scholarly community for further research and collaboration on girls and girlhood.

The symposium will be held virtually on March 29-31, 2023. We especially welcome interdisciplinary proposals from emerging scholars, graduate students, and undergraduate students. The deadline for submissions is February 5, 2023.

Paper submissions should be for 10-15 minute presentations. Submissions should include a paper title and a 250-300 word abstract, along with the presenter’s name, university affiliation, email address, and a short bio (3-5 sentences). Academic paper presentations on any current or recent research, side projects, or possible future projects, unfinished, and work-in-progress papers are

welcome. We also welcome roundtable or panel proposals, and ask that you include information for all panelists in one submission.

The College English Association, a gathering of scholar-teachers in English studies, welcomes proposals for presentations on Caribbean Literature for our 53rd annual conference. Submit your proposal at www.cea-web.org.

The general conference theme is “confluence,” so we are especially interested in presentations that feature topics relating to our theme of confluence in texts, disciplines, people, cultural studies, media, and pedagogy.

We welcome individual and panel presentation proposals that address Caribbean literature in general, including—but not limited to—the following possible themes:Convergence: blending the past and the present—or dividing it

Individuality: struggling to find the self in the many; the value of standing alone

Heritage: recognizing those who came before and their influence on us now

Transcultural life: living in-between; creating a new space

Revision: re-seeing the parts that have created the whole; the dangers of privileging one

Reclamation: uncovering the forgotten voices; contrasting with the dominant voice

General Call for Papers: CEA also welcomes proposals for presentations in any of the areas English departments typically encompass, including literature criticism and scholarship, creative writing, composition, technical communication, linguistics, and film. We also welcome papers on areas that influence our work as academics, including student demographics, student/instructor accountability and assessment, student advising, academic leadership in departments and programs, and the place of the English department in the university.

The research project PROFMUS – To be a musician in Portugal: the socio-professional condition of musicians in Lisbon (1750-1985), funded by FCT (PTDC/ART-PER/32624/2017), invites the submission of paper proposals for the international conference Music as a Profession: Status, Careers and Organizations (18^th-20^th centuries), which will take place at the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas - Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Colégio Almada Negreiros), on 31 June and 1 July 2022.

The historical importance of musicians’ professional organizations for the definition of their careers and social status, as well as their impact on society's perception of musicians and their activities has received increasing attention from Musicologists, and also from disciplines such as Sociology and History. However, research on these subjects is still insufficient and unsystematic. The international conference Music as a Profession: Status, Careers and Organizations (18^th-20^th centuries) aims to encourage dialogue and exchange on these issues and related topics in an international and long-term perspective, through different scientific approaches.

The scientific committee encourages submissions within the following topics:
- Social and professional status of musicians in different geographical, political, social and cultural contexts
- The impact of training models on careers and access to the profession
- The status of the musician through the ages
- Women and musical professions
- Labour relations and musicians' employment contracts
- Local musicians vs. Foreign musicians
- Circulation and mobility of musicians
- Material conditions of the daily life of professional musicians
-  Musicians as seen by society/Musicians as seen by themselves: perceptions and representations
- Professional Organizations: brotherhoods, confraternities, academies, mutual benefit associations, class associations, trade unions

 

Scholars are invited to submit proposals for individual papers which shall not exceed 20 minutes.

Abstracts should not exceed 300 words, and should be accompanied by a brief curriculum vitae of 150 words max.
