CFP: 4th Derrida Today Conference


Call for Papers:
The Derrida Today Conference will focus on the ongoing value of either Derrida’s work, or deconstruction, to the political-ethical, cultural, artistic and public debates and philosophical futures that confront us.
The conference will be broadly interdisciplinary and invites contributions from a range of academic, disciplinary and cultural contexts. We will accept papers and panel proposals on any aspect of Derrida’s work, or deconstruction, in relation to various topics and contemporary issues, such as: philosophy, phenomenology and other theoretical/philosophical thinkers, literature, psychoanalysis, architecture and design, law, film and visual studies, haptic technologies, photography, art, music, dance, embodiment, feminism, race and whiteness studies, disability studies, politics, ethics, sociology, cultural studies, queer theory, sexuality, education, science (physics, biology, medicine, chemistry), IT and multimedia, technology, etc. We also accept papers that engage in the spirit of deconstructive thought (if not on Derrida or deconstruction itself).

Restaging the Song: Adapting Broadway for the Silver Screen

The release of Cameron Mackintosh’s screen production of Les Misérables into cinemas in December 2012 reopened an age-old debate: how do you adapt Broadway musicals for the big screen? The urge to capitalise on the commercial triumph of material that was written for the stage has often brought uncomfortable results, with no clear strategy for success. Sometimes, a new team of writers is brought in to write a different score under the same title, as with On the Town (1949), many of whose Bernstein songs were replaced. Similarly, The Band Wagon (1953) features its Broadway star (Fred Astaire), title and a few songs, but is otherwise quite distinct from its source as a revue. For the screen version of On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970), Alan Jay Lerner and Burton Lane reconceived their script and score around a specific new performer, Barbra Streisand, making numerous changes to their Broadway show along the way. Other films are much more faithful to their Broadway counterparts, such as My Fair Lady (1964) and West Side Story (1961), but sometimes this approach is criticised as failing to acknowledge the change of medium, with “stagey” results.
Changes of text, star, technology and audience can unsettle the apparent stability of a Broadway hit and this conference aims to deal head on with this discomfort/instability. Film scholars, musicologists, practitioners, historians and sociologists are equally encouraged to participate in this truly interdisciplinary conference. The keynote speech will be given by Professor Geoffrey Block (author of “Enchanted Evenings”), and the conference respondent will be Professor Stephen Banfield (author of “Sondheim’s Broadway Musicals”).
Innovative presentation formats are strongly favoured. In particular, we would like to encourage panels in which scholars and practitioners from a variety of backgrounds will have the opportunity to discuss ideas including (but not limited to) the following:
-          The impact of changing star performers between stage and screen
-          Problems of condensing or retaining material for the screen
-          Ideas of authenticity and faithfulness in reproducing stage shows on the screen
-          Archival evidence illustrating the adaptation process
-          Analytical comparisons of parts of the stage and screen versions of a musical
-          Sociological discussions regarding changes of audience resulting in screen adaptation (e.g. from New York to a global audience)
Proposals for twenty-minute papers, panels or other presentation formats should be submitted electronically by Tuesday 10 September 2013, 11:59 p.m. Students wishing to present developmental work are warmly encouraged to apply to speak for 5-10 minutes if they prefer.
Abstracts should be around 250 words and may be accompanied by a CV. Please send files in .doc or .pdf formats.

The Restaging the Song conference is part of The University of Sheffield’s Stagestruck! Broadway Meets Hollywood Festival, 14-18 May 2014. It includes screenings of seven film adaptations of Broadway musicals to complement the conference, including Roberta (14 May), Funny Girl (1968, 15 May), Show Boat (1936, 16 May), The Band Wagon (1953, 17 May), Les Miserables (2012, 17 May), On the Town (1949, 18 May) and Dreamgirls (2006, 18 May). Each film will be introduced by a guest speaker, and there will be an exhibition of posters and memorabilia in the Workstation, adjacent to the conference room. Book launches and other events will be announced in due course.

General Information on Presentation
Parallel Sessions Parallel Sessions will run on November 21st and 22nd. Sessions are usually 90 minutes in length, and normally include six or seven presenters. Presentations and EquipmentAll meeting rooms are equipped with a screen, an LCD projector, and a laptop computer installed with PowerPoint software.  You will be able to insert your USB flash drive into the computer.  We recommend that you bring two copies of your presentation in case if one fails.  You may also link your own laptop computer to the projector cable, however if you use your own Mac please ensure you have the requisite connector. A Polite Request to All Participants
Participants are obliged to arrive on time for all sessions, whether to their own, or to those of other presenters.  Presenters should pay special attention to the time slots that are subject to be divided equally among all oral presentations in one session to ensure that each presenter has equal right to presentation.  The session chair is responsible for taking care of the fair division of presentation time.

The main idea of the conference is to create a platform for multidisciplinary discussion of the contemporary role of women in various dimensions of social life, taking into account diversity of cultures, religions, legal and socio-economic opportunities in different areas of the world.

Analysis of manifestations, determinants and barriers of women’s activity is a subject that should have its place in the scientific discourse, especially in terms of the European Year of Active Citizenship. As this multidimensional phenomenon should be approached from an interdisciplinary perspective, we would like to invite researchers and practitioners dealing with contemporary role of women and issues such as respect for others, freedom, equality, solidarity and human rights.

The conference encourages multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary research initiatives. To emphasize multicultural dimension of the conference the guests speakers from different countries are being invited. Therefore, we hope that our project will also become a platform for an exchange of experience and practice. Aside the scientific significance of the conference, we hope that our analysis and discussions will also result in the process of integration of women’s dimensions and will be reflected in the programs of social policies. All accepted papers will be published in printed bilingual conference books/proceedings in English and Polish.

FilmAsia 2013 Conference Themes:

1) Social Media and Responsibility; Globalization and Internationalization


As technological innovations and advances have created an ever-growing media net, and where lines have become increasingly blurred between users and consumers, questions of media accountability continue to be a constant source of discussion. Media organizations around the world are becoming increasingly socially, ethnically and culturally diverse, both as a consequence of globalization and in response to internationalization. Social media has infused itself in the lives of every young person in the developed world today. And the types of social media that we use are ever growing, evolving and changing. The way we communicate has also changed dramatically moving further away from face-to-face communication. This theme looks at how social media has been used increasingly within films, storylines, and around film and film production, marketing and distribution.


2) Connectedness, Identity and Alienation
Being connected through social networking sites has become an accepted form of communication in today's digitalized world. People can spend hours a day talking on mobile phones, on Skype, or on the Internet, which gives the impression that we are a more connected world than ever before. And communication is lauded. Because of the massive information flow we can call ourselves perhaps the most connected age in history. But is this connectedness, however, real or illusory? Quantity of communication does not guarantee quality. For example, to many sensitive people, when they call a number and hear the words "Please listen to the following options" the sense of connectedness suddenly becomes alienating. The crude mechanics entailed can make people feel suspicious, isolated, and even threatened by an invisible structure they cannot penetrate. A raft of serious existential issues arises out of this. What impact does this have on the self whose identity in the time/space continuum, in the rapidly changing environment, and in these manufactured structures, depends for its development on interaction with perceived reality? What becomes the definition of the human? And what of the awareness of the transcendent in the human spirit from which ethics and aesthetics depend for their existence? Far from being questions of the present moment, these are parameters that will dominate the central problem of human self-understanding as we progress further into the uncharted waters of a highly uncertain future. 

The Asian Conference on Film and Documentary encourages sessions within and across a variety of disciplines and fields related to Film and Documentary, including:

Please note that you are asked to submit only ONE proposal of any kind to the FilmAsia 2013 Conference


Individual Presenter (30 minutes paper/60 minute workshop)


You can submit a proposal to present an individual paper or give a workshop at FilmAsia 2013 under the open call for papers. Please submit through the online system by clicking on the ONLINE SUBMISSIONS SYSTEM button below. You will be asked to create your own personal account before you will be able to upload your proposal. You can then return to the system at any time using your user name and password to edit your information and submission. Your proposal will normally be reviewed within two weeks.

If your proposal is accepted you will be invited to register for the Conference. Upon payment of the registration fee your paper or workshop will be scheduled for presentation. If you wish your paper to be published in the Conference proceedings, please ensure that a paper is uploaded through the online system by December 1, 2013.

All papers accompanying accepted proposals will be considered for inclusion in the peer-reviewed Conference journal.


Virtual Presenter

We understand that some presenters will be unable to make the trip to Japan to present their paper, mainly due to financial and/or political restrictions on travel. FilmAsia 2013 has therefore instituted a virtual presentation system to allow the authors of accepted proposals the same publication opportunities as regular presenters.

You can submit a proposal for virtual presentation under the open call for papers through the online system by clicking on the ONLINE SUBMISSIONS SYSTEM button below. You will be asked to create your own personal account before you will be able to upload your proposal. You can then return to the system at any time using your user name and password to edit your information and submission. Your proposal will normally be reviewed within two weeks.

If your proposal is accepted you will be invited to register for the Conference as a virtual presenter. Upon payment of the registration fee your paper will be listed as a virtual presentation. If you wish your paper to be published in the Conference proceedings, please ensure that a paper is uploaded through the online system byDecember 1 2013.

All papers accompanying accepted virtual proposals will be considered for inclusion in the peer-reviewed Conference journal. We do not allow presentations by video-conferencing but virtual presenters are encouraged to upload a video of their presentation onto the FilmAsia 2013 YouTube conference channel. Information on how to do this will be given to you following registration.

Following the Conference you will be mailed a Conference pack including a printed copy of the FilmAsia 2013 programme and a certificate of virtual participation.


Panel Organizer (90 minutes)

As the chair/organizer of a proposed panel, you can submit a proposal through the online system by clicking on the ONLINE SUBMISSIONS SYSTEM button below.

As the chair/organizer of the panel/colloquium, you will be asked to create your own personal account before you will be able to upload your proposal. You can then return to the system at any time using your user name and password to edit your information and submission.

Panels should have at least four participants (including the chair). All the panel/colloquium participants must be listed in the submission, listing the chair or leader as the primary author, and the other presenters as co-authors. Panel organizers are responsible for the arrangement of all the presenters under their proposed topics, and should ensure that all are firmly committed.

Your proposal will normally be reviewed within two weeks.

If your proposal is accepted you will be invited to register for the Conference. Please ensure that you transmit the submission reference number to the other members of your colloquium and invite them to register in timely fashion. Upon payment of the registration fee of ALL PARTICIPANTS your colloquium will be scheduled in the Conference programme.

If you, as the panel/colloquium chair, wish to publish a joint paper associated with the panel/colloquium in the Conference proceedings, please ensure that a paper is uploaded through the online system by December 1 2013.

If you and your panel/colloquium members wish to publish separate papers then they will have to register individually with the system and submit their proposals for review.


General Information

Abstracts of no more than 250 words should be submitted by July 1 September 15 2013.

All abstracts will be double blind reviewed by a voluntary team, and authors will usually be notified of the decision of the reviewers within two weeks of submission. Those who submit near the July 1 September 15 2013 deadline will normally receive confirmation of acceptance or rejection by October 1 2013. As we anticipate a large number of submissions, we strongly advise that you submit in advance of the deadline.

All accepted authors may have their full paper published in the online Conference proceedings. Full text submission is due by December 1, 2013.

Selected papers from the proceedings will be considered for inclusion in the FilmAsia 2013, Conference Journal. This will be fully refereed in accordance with international standards.

Submitting a full paper for inclusion in the proceedings is optional. If you do not wish your paper to be included then do not upload a paper on the system.

The deadline for full conference payment for all presenters is October 15 2013.

Our academic events would not be what they were without a committment to ensuring adherence to international norms of abstract peer review. IAFOR relies on a large number of international scholars from around the world to contribute to a shared vision of promoting and engaging in international, intercultural and interdisciplinary dialogue, and if you are taking part in an IAFOR event, then that means you.

As all authors have had their work reviewed by at least two reviewers, in the spirit of reciprocity, similarly we ask that all accepted authors be prepared to review up to three abstracts. If your abstract has been accepted then we will usually contact you within a week with the assignation of up to three abstracts, and ask that you try and review these abstracts within one week.

Abstract Submission Process 


Acceptance of Abstract: If your abstract is accepted by the review team and you pay the Conference registration fee by the specified deadline, your submission will be scheduled in an appropriate session for oral or poster presentation at the Conference.

Final Paper Submission Process 

If your abstract is accepted for oral presentation, you are encouraged to submit a full paper before December 1, 2013 for inclusion in the FilmAsia 2013 Online Conference Proceedings. The full article should be submitted in Word (NOT pdf). Final papers should be uploaded through the submissions system. Please ensure that your paper is ready to go to press by the submission deadline (December 1), having thoroughly read the paper for errors. If English is not your first language then this is especially important. To facilitate easier processing, reviewing, and publishing all submissions, PLEASE follow this checklist: 

  • 12-point Times New Roman font
  • Single-spacing throughout the document
  • Double space (instead of indent) to designate a new paragraph or section
  • No headers, footers, or page numbers
  • Top, bottom, and side margins no less than 7/8 of an inch or 2.2 cm
  • Cover page that includes title, authors, their affiliations, their contact information, and the topic of the submission
  • Title, authors and affiliations repeated at the beginning of the body of the paper
  • Manuscript not to exceed 5000 words (excluding tables, figures and references) 
  • Manuscripts longer than 5,000 words will be returned for editing

  • Graphs and visuals can be reproduced electronically


Publication and Licensing Issues

Abstracts and follow-up full articles will be published in a Conference proceedings volume to be made available online. Authors retain copyright in their work but through the act of submission to this Conference are agreeing to a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License for their work to help ensure continued global access to the work over time. All publications produced for the Conference, including abstracts, full papers and presentation slides will be openly archived eventually on the FilmAsia site.
