Performance and Performativity in Modern South Asia

Performnace and Performativity in Modern South Asia: An Interdiciplinary preconference
Madison, WI
October 26-29, 2017

This preconference approaches ‘performance’ as both a rich object of analysis and a theoretical framework for the study of South Asian culture and praxis. In so doing, it demands a dedicated engagement with the diverse forms of performance in South Asia ¬– including but not limited to theatre, performance art, dance, music, and performativity. The use of performance as both a tool and an object of analysis is an often under-represented field within the discipline of South Asian Studies, and we seek in this conference to emphasize its importance to topics as diverse as government bureaucracy, feminist protest, and recuperative historiography. By invoking performance as a conceptual category, we illuminate the potential for performative modes of reading and analysis to generate new understandings of the articulations of caste, class, gender and sexuality within South Asia. Given the wide scope of this preconference, we hope to attract scholars and performers from a range of disciplines and sub-fields, uniting them around the question of what performance can do for the study of Modern South Asia.

Possible topics include:

• Feminist protest and performativity
• Neoliberal frameworks in performance
• Theater as historiography
• The relationship between performance, memory and the archive
• Performance and community: questions of ‘nation,’ ‘culture,’ and belonging
• Interculturalism/global networks and the circulation of performance
• Performance and the question of caste
• Performing queer identities.
• Dance, movement, and the circulation of affect
• Theater and dance in the diaspora

Deadline:
Please submit an abstract of no more than 250 words and a bio of no more than 100 words by June 15, 2017 to Jisha Menon, Kat Frances Lieder, and Sharvari Sastry at sharvarisastry@uchicago.edu. Please also include any technical needs your presentation may have. We will do our best to accommodate.

This preconference is invested in approaching performance as a generative site that produces its own forms of embodied knowledges and discursive practices that can challenge, critique and extend the scope of academic scholarship. To this end, we invite enthusiastically invite performers to submit proposals for performances of no more than 30 minutes in length.

Keywords: performance, theater, dance, music, performativity, affect, audience, spectacle

"Myths, Tales and Urban Legends"

25 November, 2017 – London, UK

Call For Papers:

London exerts the charm of the vast setting that concentrates most, if not all, human experiences and nurtures a multitude of self-images, as a site of permanent metamorphosis and progress where individual histories melt into a collective syntagmatic narrative of autonomy, regeneration and assimilation. From ancient Londinium to the 21st-century metropolis, the exceptional metropolis has forged a particular code of conduct governed by imagination, originality and vision that generate almost endless significations of the self.

The conference will explore the particular spirit of the English capital, one of the most influential cities in the world, aiming to identify some of the features that make up its inimitable personality. It will promote an interdisciplinary perspective on the various issues related to the process of making London into a powerful centre of economic and cultural authority. The conference will also focus on the distinctive symbolism of the city and the particular states of mind generated by the interaction with the global hub, and the way in which people - Londoners either by birth or adoption, as well as temporary residents and transient visitors - translate geographically recognisable sites into culturally constructed places.

The main objective of the event is to bring together all those interested in examining the intersections between their professions and/or interests and some distinct aspects of metropolitan life, providing an integrated approach for the understanding of London’s complex nature.

Topics include but are not limited to several core issues:
  • London times: from prehistory to the 21st century
  • melting pot or salad bowl?
  • iconic symbols of London
  • what is a Londoner?
  • walking in London
  • the Thames and the lost rivers
  • representations of London in the arts
  • the green capital
  • the senses of London
  • funny London

Conference International Federation for Research in Women's History 2018

Call For Papers:

Date: July 1, 2017
Location: British Columbia, Canada

Theme:  Transnationalisms, Transgressions, Translations”

The 12th Conference of the International Federation for Research on Women’s History/ Federation Internationale Pour la Recherche en Histoire des Femmes (IFRWH/FIRHF) will be held August 9-12, 2018 at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, BC, Unceded Coast Salish Territory-Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh, and Musqueam Nations.
The theme, “Transnationalisms, Transgressions, Translations: Conversations and Controversies,” probes the meanings of boundaries and frameworks, narratives and epistemologies, analytic terms and foundational categories, global, national and local understandings, interactions and power relations across time and space. We are open to proposals for complete panels (chair, commentator, three papers) as well as individual papers, roundtables, conversations, workshops, and non-traditional forms of presentation.

Transnationalisms

This sub-theme reflects the international turn in this era of globalization and the commitment of IFRWH/FIRHF to international histories and comparative panels in such areas as women’s and gendered movements, transnational organizations and global governance, state socialist and third world /global South manifestations, settler societies and Empires, imperialisms and colonialisms, anti-imperialism and anti-imperial uprisings, global labor, individual life trajectories, the traveling across space (and time) of ideas and objects, labor and sex trafficking, mobilities and immigration/migration, and related areas.

Transgressions

This sub-theme considers the ways various peoples over time and space define the transgressive from dominant and accepted norms of being, identity and behavior as well as the self-conscious transgressions against hegemonic gender in relation to other social factors. Papers might consider outlaws and criminalization, deviancy, rebelliousness, genderqueer and trans*gender identities and practices, witches, “bad” mothers, gender bending dress or labor, crossing race/ethnic or class/caste lines, revolutions and social movements.

Translations

How do terms of analysis travel across languages, disciplines, and time and space? What is lost in translation and how can we forge a transnational praxis when we cannot always speak well to each other? We are especially interested in the place of orality and how national historiographies and cultures of intellectual life (including the place of women’s and gender history and feminist and gender studies/theory) address concepts like gender, race/ethnicity, class, sexualities, agency, identity, power, (post)colonialism, globalization, feminisms, and development.

About the Organization:

Founded in 1987, IFRWH is affiliated with the International Congress of Historical Sciences/Comité Internationale des Sciences Historiques and consists of national affiliates from across the globe, which link scholars together in a transnational network. Beginning in 2020, it will award the Ida Bloom-Karen Offen Book Prize in Transnational Women’s and Gender History (named after two of the most active founders of the organization.) Though the language of the conference is English, and the languages of the organization are French and English, we will seek to have plenaries with translation into Spanish and from French and Spanish into English. But we want to problematize this issue and invite suggestions on how to make this component of the conference accessible. In addition, as funding permits, we will plan on having modest subventions for graduate students, and scholars from areas of the world or institutions without resources.

Submission:

Our submission link is live. Originally, we accepted proposals until March 15, 2017. Due to the fact that we are relocating the conference to Vancouver, we are accepting another round of submissions.  Please submit using our form by July 1. Send inquiries to: ifrwh18@gmail.com
