Seeking Chapter Submissions: Going to the Movies with CS Lewis-#Cambridge Scholars Publishing

 Going to the Movies with C.S. Lewis, Call for Chapters

An edited collection tentatively titled “Going to the Movies with C.S. Lewis” is seeking chapter submissions. The book is expected to be published through Cambridge Scholars Publishing.  

Having been born many years after C.S. Lewis died I of course never had the opportunity to watch a movie with the man. However, over the years I feel, as many others probably feel as well, like Lewis accompanies me as I watch movies, read books, attend church services, and make other daily pursuits. Lewis’ works shape my thinking on many theological, educational, and cultural matters like few other authors’ works do.

This book is an attempt to take some of those insights from C.S. Lewis and apply them to film studies. It will explore the thought and theology of C.S. Lewis by connecting his work with film theory, specific films, and adaptations of his work. In many ways it is a book meant to explore how Lewis’ thought can help us view films.

The following categories are meant to act as general guidance for sections of the book:

  1. Exploring Film Theory with C.S. Lewis
  2. Exploring Individual Films with C.S. Lewis
  3. Analyzing Lewis’ Life through Films of About Lewis
  4. Analyzing Lewis’ Fiction through Adaptations of his works

Some chapter ideas that would fit into the above categories include, but are not limited to:

  1. The Four Loves on film
  2. Lewis’ approach to literature as a guide to approaching film
  3. “On the Reading of Old Books” and On the Watching of Old Movies
  4. Lewis’ idea of fantasy in relation to particular films
  5. Ideas in his essays or books that relate to film studies, film theory, or individual films
  6. The many different Narnia adaptations (comparisons between the versions or examinations of particular films as adaptations of the original stories)
  7. Lewis’ thoughts on Christmas and Christmas movies (what would Lewis think of Hallmark Christmas movies?)
  8. Lewis portrayed on film – how does this change the way he is viewed?

Again, these are only suggestions. Anything connecting Lewis’ thought with the cinema will be considered.  

Submission Procedure

Please submit a chapter proposal by March 31, 2024 which includes the following: title, abstract, and a short biography of the author(s). Proposals should be a maximum of 500 words written in English, using Microsoft Word format, Times New Roman, 12 pt. font. Please send the Word document as an attachment to the book editor (Bryan Mead, bmead@etbu.edu). Authors of accepted proposals will be notified and sent specific submission guidelines. Chapter contributions should be at least 4,000 words and will follow Chicago style (footnotes and bibliography). Submissions are welcome from early career researchers and established scholars.

If your proposal is accepted, chapter submissions will be due by September 15, 2024. Proposal acceptance does not guarantee chapter’s inclusion in the book.

Editor Information: Bryan Mead, Ph.D, is Assistant Professor of English at East Texas Baptist University where he teaches film studies, literature, and composition. He is the author of Writing in Film Studies, From Professional Practice to Practical Pedagogy (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2024). Bryan has also published many essays in journals such as Journal of Religion & Film, Journal of European Popular Culture, Americana: The Journal of American Popular Culture, Intégrité: A Faith and Learning Journal, and Film & History. His essays have also appeared in edited volumes such as J.R.R. Tolkien and the Arts: A Theology of Subcreation (Square Halo Press, 2021), Representations of Sports Coaches in Film: Looking to Win (Routledge, 2017), and The Arts of Memory and the Poetics of Remembering (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2016).

Call for Papers on #South #Asian #Crime #Fiction since the 1950s -#FilmStudies #Cinema #Regionalcinema, #Vernacular -June 2024


Crime Fiction has been one of the popular genres for the South Asian reading public since colonial times. The simultaneous emergence of murder mysteries, detective fiction, thrillers in the metropolis as well as the colonies has been richly documented by the brilliant work done in Urdu, Hindi and Bangla by Naim (2023), Brueck and Orsini (2022), Roy (2020, 2017), Oesterheld (2009), Daeschel (2003) and others. Moving beyond arguments of imitative models into debates on the postcolonial in crime fiction, world crime fiction, gender in twentieth century crime writings, espionage narratives during the Cold War and more, this edited volume proposes to launch into broader yet interconnected themes of crime fiction in the regional languages and cartographies in South Asia. We broadly define the region as that of India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The proposed volume will shift the focus away from anglocentric studies of crime fiction to explore the production, reception, and scholarship of crime fiction in the indigenous languages of South Asia since the 1950s. We seek chapters that address the following themes but are not necessarily restricted to them:  

 

  1. Vernacular crime fiction in the shadow of the Cold War
  2. Crime fiction published in the early days of the young nations of India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka  
  3. Women as actors, writers, and publishers in South Asian crime fiction
  4. Configurations of gender: women criminals, vamps, molls, and women detectives
  5. Urban crime or the city as the centre of crime and detection. How does the character of a metropolis interact with the mechanics of crime fiction?
  6. Migration and crime fiction in the late twentieth century 
  7. Film and crime fiction (our primary interest is fiction)
  8. Translations, adaptations, and imitations 
  9. Vernacular print cultures such as magazines and newspapers and crime fiction
  10. Readership and vernacular crime fiction
  11. Pulp fiction/Lowbrow fiction and crime fiction in regional languages
  12. Gothic and crime fiction in South Asia

Please send your abstracts (500 words) and a short bio-note (50 words) by March 15th to southasiancriminality@gmail.com. We will get back to you with our responses promptly by 1st April. If selected, full chapters (4,000 - 6,000 words) are to be submitted no later than 30th June, 2024. In case of any query do not hesitate to contact us on the email address provided.

CFA:Special issue of Women’s Writing (Taylor & Francis) on Unveiling Untold Narratives: Rediscovering the Literary Legacy of Jewish Female Writers and Representations of Jewish Women by Female Writers from the 1700s to the 1920s

Description: This compilation seeks to shed light on the often-overlooked voices and hidden gems within the vast tapestry of Jewish women’s writing, as crafted by female authors during a transformative period in history.

Delving into the rich and diverse literary landscape spanning the 18th to the early 20th centuries, this special issue aims to rectify the historical oversight of significant contributions made by Jewish women writers. From the Enlightenment era through the Victorian age and into the early waves of feminism, these women defied societal expectations and challenged the status quo, using the power of the written word to articulate their experiences, dreams, and challenges.

One of the primary goals of this special issue is not only to highlight neglected voices but also to critically examine the representations of Jewish women by female writers during this pivotal period. By doing so, we aim to foster a nuanced understanding of how these representations have shaped and been shaped by cultural, social, and historical contexts. Through a careful exploration of the ways in which Jewish women writers portrayed their own identities, as well as the characters they created, we seek to unravel the complexities of gender, religion, and ethnicity in the literary landscape.

This special issue serves as a scholarly platform to reexamine familiar texts and to unearth hidden treasures, fostering a renewed appreciation for the resilience, creativity, and intellectual prowess of Jewish women writers. We aim to challenge conventional literary canons and invite our readers to join us in reevaluating the historical and cultural significance of these works. As we embark on this exploration, “Unveiling Untold Narratives” becomes a catalyst for reshaping our understanding of the literary contributions of Jewish women, both as authors and as the subjects of representation. Join us in this intellectual excavation, as we illuminate the pages that, for too long, have remained in the shadows, and celebrate the voices that deserve their rightful place in the literary canon.

We welcome essays on:

· Periodical Culture

· Poetry

· All types of fiction and non-fiction

We also welcome suggestions for reviews and reviewers for this special issue of the journal.

Completed articles are expected to be between 6500­–8000 words and will be due 31 October 2024.

CFP: Edited Volume on Deconstructing the #Gender-Based #Violence in #South #Asian #Literature and #Popular #Culture







Gender-based violence is a worldwide issue with an extended past that is predominantly an outcome of social norms and power disparities. In countries as different as Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Nicaragua, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe, studies find that violence is frequently viewed as physical chastisement—the husband’s right to ‘correct’ an erring wife (Heise 1999). Unfortunately, it is one of many societal concerns that literature has long addressed. According to the analysis of a report by CARE and International Rescue, gender-based violence has arisen amid the pandemic and quarantines (Haneef and Kalyanpur 2020). Authors from different corners of the world have examined the complexities of violence and its effects on individuals and society in everything from classic works to modern novels. Some worth mentioning examples would be Lolita (1955) by Vladimir Nabokov, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969) by Maya Angelou, Kindred (1979) by Octavia E. Butler, Milk and Honey (2014) by Rupi Kaur, Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body (2017) by Roxane Gay, Speak: The Graphic Novel (2018) by Laurie Halse Anderson, My Dark Vanessa (2020) by Kate Elizabeth Russell, Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands (2022) by Kate Beaton, When I Hit You: Or, A Portrait of the Writer as a Young Wife by Meena Kandasamy. Reading literature offers readers an opportunity to empathise with characters’ experiences and gain a deeper, more nuanced understanding of the emotional and psychological aspects of gender-based violence often in the forms of ‘slow violence’ (Nixon 2011). Literature can aid readers in developing empathy for survivors through fictional narratives and in understanding the value of services and support for victims. Additionally, literature frequently offers a voice to marginalised people, highlighting their experiences and encouraging societal change. Gavey’s study Just Sex? The Cultural Scaffolding of Rape (2005) argues that cultural scaffolding continues to make rape not only possible but probable and that this support provides an alibi for minimalizing rape and creating a norm for masculine sex. (Zare 3). Hence, in a way, the intertwined relationship between violence and its impacts passes through lopsided twists and turns.

 

Apart from literature, popular culture has also played a pivotal role in necessitating the trajectories of violence and perpetrations. Through films, television shows, and online media, gender-based violence is frequently portrayed in popular culture. A recent graphic anthology Drawing the Line: Indian Women Fight Back! (2014) depicts the various ways of violence in fourteen provocative sketch-stories. Scenes of sexual, emotional, and physical abuse might be shown, feeding false narratives and diminishing viewers' awareness of how severe these behaviours are.

 

This edited collection will examine how gender-based violence has been portrayed in literature and popular culture in the South Asian Context, emphasising the adverse impacts on society as well as its possibility to be changed. We are looking for chapters that deepen our understanding of different dimensions of Gender-based Violence.

• Trauma Narratives in South Asian Narratives

• Domestic Violence in South Asian Comics

• Trafficking, Trauma, and Torment in South Asian Web-series

• Physical and Psychological Abuse in South Asian Popular Culture

• Pain, Paranoia, and Partner Violence in South Asian Movies

• Film and Fiction: Perpetrators and Victims

• Mini-narratives on Facebook and Instagram
