Call for Papers for an Ed. Vol., "Contested Memories in Contemporary Asia"

 Preserving contrasting past memories and narratives can be difficult in unreceptive social and political environments where prohibition of commemorative events and vandalism are employed hand in hand to sabotage memorialization efforts. At one level, problems with memorials are not confined to post-conflict societies: memorialization of those who lost wars – such as Japan in the Second World War – is often suppressed in the name of preserving liberal order. On another level, across the Asian region the emergence of ethno-religious nationalism against the backdrop of authoritarian regimes has become alarmingly common.   

The edited collection will probe how policing, obstruction and trivialization of memories play out in the contemporary socio-economic and political landscapes across Asia, using selected case studies. It would attempt to investigate how certain memories are selectively negated by some groups while new memories are sometimes constructed of events that never happened through the distortion and fabrication of history. How certain memories are weaponized and used as tropes in rhetoric against the targeted ‘other’ and abused to serve as justification for calls for genocidal violence, projected as ‘retributive’ in nature will also be explored. More broadly, the proposed book will investigate how both policing and weaponization of memorialization play out, not only affecting everyday lived experiences but also posing a barrier for democracy. We wish to invite scholars to explore the international politics of genocide denial and recognition, such as Turkey’s denial of the Armenian genocide, Pakistan’s denial of the Bangladesh genocide, Myanmar’s denial of genocide against Rohingyas, Indonesia’s denial of the genocidal violence in East Timor and against the communists, Sri Lanka’s and Japan’s denial of their war crimes, India’s denial of the massacres of its religious minorities, such as the 1984 anti-Sikh pogroms in Delhi and the 2002 anti-Muslim pogroms in Gujarat, etc.; apology and reparations; the lack of conviction in cases of mass violence; why and how the guilty escape justice; the challenges before prosecution, the obstacles and hurdles in achieving reconciliation; competitive victimhood; the act of justifying mass violence by describing it as retributive in nature, often accompanied by a deep seated sense of majority victimhood; the forces of resistance, both domestic and foreign, to state narratives of conflict; trivialization of genocide memory; the proliferation of genocide terminology; the phenomenon of blaming the victim; Holocaust inversion; disputes over historical legacies in public spaces; and any other aspect of memory contestation and conflict of narratives.    

Scope of the Edited Volume

In such context, the main objective of the proposed edited volume is to offer insights into contested memories in the Asian region. The prospective contributors will include scholars, academics, research students, activists, and peacebuilders, but will not be limited only to them. Through this book, we would like to initiate a wider thematic debate on memory discourse, local conditions and responses, inspired by the pluralist values, the rule of law and peace and reconciliation efforts.

Chapter proposals of around 300 words with a biographical profile of the author (around 200 words) as a single Word file are invited for the above mentioned envisioned edited volume latest by 1 April 2024. The successful contributors will be invited to submit their full paper between 5,000 - 8,000 words (excluding references) at a later date. The edited volume will be published by an international academic publisher.

Bios of Editors

Dr. Navras J. Aafreedi is an Assistant Professor of History at Presidency University, Kolkata, a Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy, New York, and a Fellow of the Salzburg Global Seminar under its Holocaust Education & Genocide Prevention Program and its Asia Peace Innovators Forum. Besides several papers in peer-reviewed journals, chapters in edited collections published by prestigious international scholarly publishing houses, such as De Gruyter, Routledge, Springer, Indiana University Press, Cambridge Scholars Publishing, Lexington, etc., and op-eds in popular media, his numerous publications include a monograph Jews, Judaizing Movements and the Traditions of Israelite Descent in South Asia (New Delhi: Pragati Publications, 2016) and a co-edited collection Conceptualizing Mass Violence: Representations, Recollections, and Reinterpretations (London and New York: Routledge, 2021). He has held visiting fellowships at the universities of Tel Aviv (2006-2007) and Sydney (2015), and at the Woolf Institute, Cambridge, UK (2010). Dr. Aafreedi was a scholar-in-residence at the ISGAP-Oxford Summer Institute on Curriculum Development in Critical Antisemitism Studies at St. John's College, Oxford in 2017. He received the degrees of BA, MA and PhD from the University of Lucknow. He commenced his teaching career at Gautam Buddha University, Greater Noida in 2010 and has been teaching at Presidency University, Kolkata since 2016. His latest publication is a chapter titled "Hitler's Popularity and the Trivialization of the Holocaust in India" in Holocaust vs. Popular Culture: Interrogating Incompatibility and Universalization, edited by Mahitosh Mandal & Priyanka Das (London and New York: Routledge, 2023). His forthcoming publications will be brought out by Brill, Oxford University Press, Routledge, University of Nebraska Press, Wiley-Blackwell, Academic Studies Press, etc.

Dishani Senaratne is a doctoral researcher at the University of Queensland, focusing on the emergence of ethnolinguistic nationalism and its alignment with Sinhala Buddhist nationalism.  She's also the Founder/Project Director of Writing Doves, a non-profit initiative that employs a literature-based approach to enhance young learners' intercultural understanding. Earlier, she taught English at the University of Sabaragamuwa of Sri Lanka. In addition, she’s a Fellow at the Salzburg Global Seminar.

CFP:Two-Day National Seminar on Revisiting Mahatma Jyotiba Phule’s Vision - Its Contemporary Relevance: 15th & 16th Feb, 2024, Osmania University, Hyderabad.






About the Seminar
Mahatma Jyotiba Phule (JyotiraoGovindrao Phule) pioneered the oppressed-caste movement as a leader and most influential thinker, social reformer, revolutionary activist and practitioner of human rights and popularly known as first “Mahatma' (Great Soul) of India, occupies a unique position among all social reformers in the 19th century. Due to his contributions to Indian Society, he had been acclaimed as the “father of the Indian Social Revolution”. Undoubtedly, Phule was first person to launch a movement for liberation of oppressed-castes and women of all castes during his times. His emphasis on liberation movements resulted into national movement and social revolution apart from each other in colonial
India.Phule's ideology andhisclear vision towards movements of liberation, individual freedom and self fulfillment, equality and social unity, made him unique from many other 'reformist' thinkers of his times. His uncompromising attack on the injustice prevailed in the society earned him as revolutionary. He stressed up on participatory development, which is clearly pertinent to the economic development of peasants, shudras, atishudras and women.

Phule was the first teacher of oppressed-caste communities, he was a strong critic of orthodoxy in the social system next to Buddha. He courageously envisaged alternative socio-religious reforms in the
nineteenth century, which was not an ordinary event. He meticulously presented a socio-cultural analysis that was deeply critical on caste-varna domination, which is the root cause of exploitation of oppressed - castes. He strongly believes that if both Women and sudra -athisudhra community not prone to education, they would have not been able to emancipate themselves. So he started a massive mission of imparting education by launching various schools in and around Poona. Apart from this, he presented a
treatise, to Hunter Commission, on how the Hindu orthodox system ouster majority people of society away from education.
Phule found new grounds, which throw unconventional theoretical insights into contemporary social realities and facilitate in understanding society and politics. Phule has been remembered for his contribution to various fields like education, caste inequality, agricultural reforms, economics, issues of women and widow rights, human rights,social inequality, upliftment, eradication of untouchability etc.
It is worth to realize that the persona of Phule had been influenced many personalities one among them was, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar who claimed Phule as his one of the gurus due to his noble work and
immense contributions in the socio-economic fields of India. In this context the proposed two dayNational Seminar has been looking forward to Phule's contemporary relevance and its praxis. The Seminar has beem structured into Keynote speaker, Lead Speakers, Presentations from delegates (oral /Poster) and Panel discussions.

Human Rights, Language and Culture: Advancements in Contemporary Times

Concept Note

Humans and their constant strife for emancipation, physical or psychological, has been a major sculptor for social and individual relations throughout history. This struggle extends beyond the absence of immediately apparent restraints and encompasses the freedom to think, express oneself, and exercise one's rights. Today, human rights discourse acknowledges the significance of both physical and psychological well-being as a fundamental aspect of human rights, as is enshrined in various international declarations and conventions. It implies that restrictions on these freedoms, whether through censorship, discrimination, or cultural norms, infringe upon a person's human rights.

Language and culture serve as powerful tools contributing to both communication and cognitive development to further human rights discourse. Discrimination or suppression of languages can lead to the restriction of thought and expression. Recognizing and protecting linguistic diversity ensures individual freedom and access to cultural heritage. Cultural practices, traditions, and norms also have the potential to foster or impede mental freedom. Contemporary advancements in human rights discourse involve challenging cultural norms that infringe upon individual freedoms, such as gender-based discrimination or restrictions on freedom of expression within specific cultural contexts and reconciling communal diversity with human rights principles.

The intersection of human rights, language, and culture bears significant relevance in an increasingly globalized contemporary world. In a world characterized by increasing intercultural connectivity and diversity, the study and promotion of human rights in various cultural and linguistic contexts becomes of paramount importance. This conference aims to provide a platform for scholars, activists, and practitioners to explore and discuss the advancements, challenges, and innovations related to human rights, language, and culture in contemporary times. We invite submissions investigating this shared ground between fields of human language, literature, communication, and cultural studies. Below is a prospective but not exhaustive list of relevant topics. We encourage a broad range of abstracts not limited to the list below.

Language rights and linguistic diversity.

Language barriers and integration challenges in a multicultural society.

Indigenous languages and cultural heritage.

The importance of legal documentation in regional languages for cross-cultural accessibility.

Representation of the human rights discourse through visual culture like movies, cartoon strips, songs, and graphic narratives.

Explorations of nationalism through depictions of Civil services, armed forces, and Swadesi industries in Indian literature.

Constitutional language in a globalised world.

Narratives of public employees.

Gender, identity, and human rights.  

Human rights and migrant experience.

Human rights and processes of its linguistic interpretation.  

Linguistic and cultural exchange in diaspora communities.

Narratives centred on constitutional accessibility.

Multilingual education and inclusive pedagogies.

Effective policy advocacy for linguistic and cultural rights.

Explorations of citizen rights discourse in Indian Literature.

 

 

Interested scholars should submit a 300-word abstract with the paper’s title and a brief biographical note of 100 words to nationalconference2024_clc@sgtuniversity.org by December 10, 2023. We shall revert to selected abstracts by December 16, 2023. Selected scholars shall have to submit full papers 3000-4000 words in length (formatted according to MLA 9th edition) by January 10, 2023.

Call for Papers/Voices/Participation: Approaching Academia: A Conference on Class and Culture -2024

 






CLASS CON 2024 Call for Papers/Voices/Participation

March 15th and 16th, Bowling Green State University, Jerome Library (and online)


Inspired by Ray Browne, the founder of Popular Culture Studies at BGSU, this conference seeks to give “education a broader base and greater richness” through the exploration of why and how popular culture and class are interconnected. A scholar and teacher who saw popular culture as a tool to bring together the working-class students and the elitism of academia to create a new curriculum, Browne’s legacy of inclusion and effecting change is at the heart of this year’s Class Con.

As class studies are often niche, invisible, or non-existent within many cultural studies programs, we hope to draw attention to the discipline and the broader need for class consciousness. By understanding and breaking down the structures and systems that uphold our modern class structure, this conference aims to make meaningful change both in and outside of the academic ivory tower. Specifically, with this conference we hope to brainstorm, workshop, and develop a pedagogic approach to bringing class studies into the classroom while also giving a voice to the students most impacted by economic uncertainties.

As a public university for the public good, Bowling Green State University will host an academic conference that has the potential to create good for the public to whom we are committed. This conference aims to facilitate dialog surrounding the issues of class in American culture, both in traditional academic presentations as well as in workshops, discussions, and artistic representations (written, spoken, visual, performance, etc.).

The key areas of the conference include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Labor Unions in Contemporary Culture

#CallForPublications: #Academics, #Activists, and "#Superstition" -February 28, 2024.

 



“Superstition.” Historians, folklorists, anthropologists, scholars of religion have long critiqued the term, and taught our students to do so as well. Always unavoidably ascriptive, it functions to divide: true religion from primitive magic, right reason from blind faith, “us” from “other.” Whether deployed by Stoic philosophers against the silly practices of the plebians, by medieval urban Catholics against rural “pagans,” by early modern Protestants against Catholics, by Victorian scholars against colonized and Indigenous peoples, or (across millennia) by men against the beliefs and practices of “old wives” and women more generally, the category of “superstition” is a weapon of domination and marginalization.



“Superstition.” Human rights activists, disability activists, advocates for the elderly or for children languishing in “witch camps” have recently deployed the term to great pragmatic effect. Organizations such as the #Maharashtra Blind Faith Eradication Committee in India and Advocacy for Alleged Witches in Nigeria shame the accusers of alleged witches as “superstitious.” By doing so, they forge alliances with international humanist movements, align themselves with the language of human rights organizations forged in the Enlightenment tradition, and effect policy changes to the benefit of the demonized. In a historical twist, the category of “superstition” can be a weapon of the marginalized against domination, violence, and dehumanization.




Contributions from junior scholars, and from scholars writing from and/or about historically marginalized communities, are especially welcome.

Full drafts of those contributions accepted for inclusion in the Discussion Forum will be due June 30, 2024. Anticipated publication in Magic, Ritual, and Witchcraft volume 20.1 (Spring 2025).

Discussion Forum pieces tend to be short (2000-4000 words) and conversational. While they may be theoretically sophisticated and grounded in detailed scholarship, they should also be accessible to audiences across a wide range of disciplines and positionalities: historians and sociologists, philosophers and activists, policy actors and ethnographers. Please write accordingly.

This edited volume titled Human Rights in the Age of Drones: Critical Perspectives on Post-9/11 Literature, Film and Art is under an advanced contract with a major publisher and aims to produce critical, theoretical, and analytical debates on the literary and cultural representations of the weaponized drones. We seek chapters on the intersections between human rights and the representation of drone warfare in post-9/11 visual and graffiti art, film and documentaries, plays and stage performances, and poetry, memoirs and fiction. Within the broader context of war on terror, the chapters may contemplate: how do drones complicate the conceptualization of human rights and war both in national and international discourses? How, and with what consequences, do UAVs bypass juridical procedures and normalize target-killing? What challenges do surveillance drones pose to the notions of privacy and biopolitics? How does drone aesthetics produce a counter-archive against the power and hegemonic control of the Empire? How do cultural artefacts capture and resist the violence from above? A strong engagement with the recent critical and theoretical debates on human rights and literature/art is encouraged.

Call for Papers for the Special Issue on Annihilation of Caste


CFP Special Issue on Annihilation of Caste

B. R. Ambedkar’s Annihilation of Caste (AoC) has been described by Anand Teltumbde as the Communist Manifesto of “caste India.” Unfortunately, however, there is a dearth of critical readings on this text. The upcoming special issue of All About Ambedkar: A Journal on Theory and Praxis aims to address this lacuna. The objective is to inspire renewed engagements with Ambedkar’s classic. The special issue will be co-edited by Dr Sanjiv Kondekar and Dr Mahitosh Mandal and is scheduled to be published in December 2023.

The potential contributors to the special issue are required to write original research papers on ANY aspect of Annihilation of Caste. We are mainly looking for synchronic analyses (focused solely on the text of Annihilation of Caste); however, as and where necessary, diachronic intertextual readings too are welcome.
