Call for papers #Queer Cold Wars: Deconstructing Bipolar Visions of #Gender and #Sexuality

In the twenty-first century, “LGBTQ+” has emerged as a key discursive cornerstone to signal alliances and oppositions and underpin broader geopolitical claims in the international arena. From the US War on Terror, backed by the rhetoric that Jasbir Puar defines as “homonationalism” (Puar 2013) or the EU’s use of LGBTQ+ issues in enlargement processes (Shevtsova 2020; Slootmaeckers 2017) to bans on displaying “abnormal sexual relationships and behaviors” on television in China, the declaration of the “international LGBT movement” an extremist organization in Russia, or police raids in gay clubs in Venezuela, there has emerged a picture of a world allegedly firmly divided into two camps—of states supporting LGBTQ+ rights and ones vehemently opposing them. This binary has often been theorized through the opposition of “homonationalism” vs. “heteronationalism” (see, e.g., Renkin & Trofimov 2023), and its most recent visceral manifestation is Russia’s invasion into Ukraine under the banner of fighting for “traditional values” (see, e.g., Kratochvíl & O’Sullivan 2023). Additional binaries such as Christianity vs. Islam, West vs. “the rest,” and democracy vs. autocracy have often also underpinned this framing.

Yet, how do we reconcile such binary frameworks with facts such as, for instance, a growing sexual and gender diversity within religious institutions in the uncompromisingly Catholic Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico, where queer priest:esses have been increasingly appointed as heads of parishes or churches (Bárcenas Barajas 2014; Córdova Quero 2018)? Or with the hosting of events like the Queer Art Festival in Azerbaijan—the country consistently ranked as “the worst in Europe in terms of LGBTQ+ rights” by ILGA Europe (Safarova 2021; ILGA-Europe 2023)? At the same time, signals of conservative developments come from regions firmly seen as the “pro-LGBTQ+ camp”—the introduction of “LGBT-free zones” in Poland (Ploszka 2023), a ban on gender studies in Hungary (Pető 2021), decidedly homophobic claims by the German AfD (Doer 2021), or the denial of gender affirmation to trans-individuals in Florida (Human Rights Campaign 2023). Set alongside each other, these practices decidedly call for a more nuanced approach to the idea of a bipolar world.

The proposed edited volume seeks to deconstruct an alleged bipolarity in international relations and explore the entanglements and slippages between homonationalism and political homophobia as two global forms of ideological and cultural domination. Our reference to and modification of the historical Cold War is intentional. As this concept emphasizes international political competition, tension, and proxy conflicts between two adversary camps, scholars have debunked the myth of their monolithic and dichotomic nature by revealing both the plurality within them and the porosity of boundaries “separating” them (e.g., Klepikova & Raabe 2020). In theorizing the contemporary “queer Cold Wars,” the proposed edited volume attends to such pluralities of actors and political systems that are never uniform or fully aligned in their goals, seeking to explore the roles of states, supranational organizations, transnational movements, and local and global communities. It also advocates for examining the role of the globalized economy and the spreading of neoliberal capitalism as a vehicle for transporting and adopting (and adapting) ideas of homonationalism and political homophobia (think here, for example, of Rahul Rao’s concept of “homocapitalism”; Rao 2015). Finally, it recognizes the alignment of these new “Cold Wars” with the arrival of the era of digital cultures and interrogates the role of digital infrastructures and networks in troubling the alleged binaries.

We welcome papers that seek to trouble binary geopolitical visions of sexuality and gender from the following perspectives and beyond:

  • religion (organized faith, economics of belief, etc.)
  • economic perspectives (humanitarian aid, homocapitalism, etc.)
  • education (schooling, ban on sex education, “protection of minors” discourse)
  • research (challenges to queer research globally, bans of research institutions, ethics of transgressing boundaries of the global West/South/East divides)
  • healthcare (regulations, adoption of ICD-11)
  • media (representations, global cultures of queerness, streaming platforms as vehicles of queerness)
  • culture (literature, film, arts; infrastructures of queerness – festivals, etc.)
  • memory politics (museification; showcasing of national and/or transnational queer histories)
  • mobility (sex tourism, asylum seeking, etc.)
  • digital cultures (networked homophobia; digital activism, etc.)

Contributions from all Social Sciences and Humanities disciplines are welcome (Political Science, Social Science, History, Economics, Cultural Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Religion Studies, Media Studies, Memory Studies, Education Science, Medical Humanities, etc.)

Timeline and Requirements: Please submit a 500-word abstract and a short bio (one PDF) by May 31, 2024 (to maryna.shevtsova@kuleuven.be; tatiana.klepikova@ur.de; emil.edenborg@gender.su.se).

In case of acceptance (communicated by late June), a 4000-word extended draft should be submitted by October 11, 2024. The editors are currently seeking funding to workshop extended drafts among contributors—should this funding be granted, the workshop will take place on October 28–29, 2024 in Leuven, Belgium.

Full papers (up to 7,000–8,000 words, incl. footnotes and references) will be due by February 1, 2025. All contributions will undergo a rigorous peer review before publication. Editors are also securing funding to publish the edited volume in open access. They will submit a proposal to an international publisher following the selection of abstracts submitted in response to the call for papers.

Call For Papers: Cute #Ecologies: a critical-creative Symposium 7th June 2024 Online (Zoom)

 Hosted by AWW-STRUCK, this day of lightning talks and presentations on critical research and creative practice features a roundtable conversation between invited speakers (confirmed):

  • Miranda Lowe (principal curator of Crustacea at the Natural History Museum London).
  • Claire Catterall (curator of Cute at Somerset House, London)
  • Hugh Warwick (author of Beauty in the Beast and spokesperson for The British Hedgehog Preservation Society)

Encountering cute forms of nature, from bunnies and hedgehogs to monkeys and deer, is an everyday experience for most of us. They appear on tea towels, cakes and images gone viral on social media. The cute nonhuman might even be our companion animal. The apparently simple, benign nature of cuteness means it goes unexamined, especially in the context of the environmental crisis where the aesthetic is likely to appear irrelevant, if not irreverent. This symposium challenges such thinking by asking: Can cuteness prompt care-giving behaviour for environments? What power dynamics exist in the ‘cutification’ of flora and fauna? What fate for ‘uncute’ species? 

Recent developments in cute studies demonstrate the power of cute to increase pro-social and pro-environmental behaviours. Conservation charities know as much, employing the cutest species to drive public donation. However, the bias toward charismatic megafauna is also known to be a problem. Anthropomorphism and domestication emerge again and again in our encounters with the nonhuman. And perhaps ourselves. As cute studies scholar Joshua Paul Dale recently suggested, Homo sapiens may well have emerged because women preferred cuddlier companions to cavemen. 

We welcome papers that address topics through critical research and/or through creative practice (poetry, film, performance, music, visual artwork). Topics or areas of research may include:

  • Animal studies and plant studies
  • Childhood culture and children’s geography
  • Charismatic megafauna 
  • Domestication and scale
  • Conservation science and political ecology
  • Popular culture, Disney studies, anime and manga studies
  • Commodification, material objects and waste
  • Technology, cyborgs and artificial intelligence 

Possible formats include: 5-minute lightning talks, 20-minute presentations.

Please include a short bio (100 words max). If you are a creative practitioner, please include two samples of your work.

Call for Applicants : Workshop on Women and Crime Fiction - June- 2024

 Ever since the genre established itself in the Anglophone world in the mid-nineteenth century, crime fiction and discussions of crime fiction have tended to underemphasize the role women play in it, unless they are victims or femme fatales. Yet women, as authors, major characters, and audience members, have been a part of the genre since the very beginning. Indeed, it has been about a century since one could have feasibly considered crime and detective fiction (written or otherwise) as a “male-dominated genre,” and scholarship has followed suit: from Kathleen Gregory Klein’s The Woman Detective to Sally R. Munt’s Murder by the Book?, from Priscilla L. Walton and Manina Jones’ Detective Agency to Gill Plain’s Twentieth Century Crime Fiction – the study of femininity and crime fiction has proved to be extremely fertile ground for analysis and debate.

Quite often, however, these studies and debates remain within clearly defined historical boundaries, with the result that the female detectives and authors of the nineteenth century only rarely come into scholarly contact with their peers from the “Golden Age of Detective Fiction,” the femmes fatales of the hardboiled mode, the feminist sleuths of the 1970s and 1980s, or the multimedial third- and fourth-wave-feminist contributions produced since the turn of the millennium. Additionally, the investigation of the contents of genre fiction are rarely combined with a study of female recipients.

Studies have shown that women seem to be the main audience for true-crime books (Vicary and Fraley 82). This interest holds true across various media; true crime is the most popular podcast subject in the US (Stocking et al.) and the audience for these highly popular podcasts consists mostly of women (Stocking et al., Greer 154–155). Women are also active as producers of such fare. For example, the genre-defining podcast Serial, hosted, written, and produced by Sarah Koenig, became the first podcast to win a Peabody Award in 2015. Further examples include the podcasts Drunk Women Solving Crime or My Favorite Murder, both hosted by women.

This workshop seeks to counteract the prevailing scholarly compartmentalisation and to bridge the aforementioned historical and disciplinary gaps by convening scholars to present and discuss their work on femininity and crime literature, film, television, videogaming, podcasting, fan fiction, etc., from any historical period. Not only does this approach serve to facilitate a more holistic approach to the long and varied history of crime fiction; it also allows for interdisciplinary and diachronic takes on the topic, bringing together perspectives from different branches of the humanities and social sciences.

Keynote: Dr. Kerstin-Anja Münderlein (University of Bamberg): “‘She’s a woman, and women act in a silly way’: Policing and (Re-)Negotiating Acceptable Femininity from the Golden Age to Syd Moore” 

Papers: We invite abstracts for 20-minute papers in English covering texts from all kinds of media (literature, film, television, podcasting, videogaming, etc.), discussing topics such as:

  • Female characters and stereotypes in crime fiction
  • The femme fatale
  • Women as audience for crime fiction
  • Women as producers of crime fiction
  • Intersectional approaches to issues of race, class, and nationality
  • The rise of female-led podcasts

CFP: Listening in Many Tongues: Multilingual Interpretive Communities and Acts of Translation in Early Modern South Asia -Oct-2024

 Recent scholarship on South Asia has exemplified the importance of drawing on multilingual sources as well as multi-disciplinary approaches - reading, listening, and visualising the vernacular and the cosmopolitan in conversation, rather than through hierarchical relationships. The overlapping and multidirectional networks of patronage and production have led not only to the creation of new genres of text and performance but also to the articulation of pre-existing traditions within new intellectual milieux and expanding communities of contact and exchange. What has emerged, following the scholarship of Francesca Orsini, Aditya Behl, and Barry Flood, amongst others, is the understanding of translation as a process of transformation and constant reinterpretation, a “dynamic form of production” (Flood 2007, 107) which translates and reinterprets aesthetic categories of, for instance, music and literature in new and constantly shifting contexts.

Undoubtedly, and building upon the pioneering work of Sheldon Pollock, a focus on ideas and modes of translation across “cosmopolitan” and “vernacular” language models has proliferated scholarship on early modern South Asia. In particular, Francesca Orsini’s scholarly intervention has encouraged us to investigate the ‘multilingual locals’ implied in areas of such contact and exchange. While using this emphasis on translation as a jumping-off point, this conference invites papers on the multivalent methods of translation in medieval and early modern South Asia - methods by which various interpretive communities sought equivalences, reinterpretations, and transcreations between and across literary and performative genres.

This conference will seek to place scholars working across fields, languages, and geographies on ideas of translation in conversation, such as those concentrating on Ismaili and Sufi studies in Persian and South Asian vernaculars, or Jain and Apabhramsa texts in translation, or across Arabic, Malayalam, and sites in South India. Given the scholarly remit of the South Asian Studies Unit here at the IIS, we particularly invite papers focusing on Ismaili and other Shi'i-related contexts in South Asia.

We invite abstracts of 250-300 words by the 19th of April, 2024, emailed to SASconference@iis.ac.uk along with a short (ca. 100 words) bio. Speakers will also be invited to contribute to a subsequent edited volume, to be published with the IIS South Asia Studies Series.

Contributions are invited on topics including (but not limited to):

CFP: International Conference on The Ends and Means of Liberal Education -- Extended Call for Papers -May- 2024

The powerful, transformative forces reshaping contemporary societies both challenge liberal education and provide it with new opportunities. The Ends and Means of Liberal Education in the Twenty-First Century conference will explore the relevance and possibilities of undergraduate liberal education given the advent of artificial intelligence, digital media, political polarisation, cultural fragmentation, and growing economic and social instability.

Proposals are invited for papers on any aspect of the nature and provision of liberal education. Broad theoretical reflections, particular case studies, and reasoned, evidenced polemical presentations are all welcomed. The conference will be a forum for voices from disciplines across the humanities, natural and social sciences, and professions.

The conference keynote speaker will be Professor Henry Giroux, Chair for Scholarship in the Public Interest​ at Macmaster University and the Paulo Freire Distinguished Scholar in Critical Pedagogy.  Professor Giroux is a leading exponent of critical pedagogy and author of more than 70 books including the influential University in Chains (2007), Neoliberalism's War on Higher Education (2014, 2020), and Pedagogy of Resistance: Against Manufactured Ignorance (2022).

Call for Submissions- International #Gender and #Sexuality Studies #Conference on "Recognition, Resistance, Resilience,"

 The International Gender and Sexuality Studies Conference, hosted by the University of Central Oklahoma’s Women’s Research Center and the BGLTQ+ Student Center in collaboration with the UCO chapter of the National Organization for Women, is calling for submissions for its ninth annual conference. Themed "Recognition, Resistance, Resilience," the conference aims to foster diverse perspectives on these themes.

The deadline for abstract submissions is Friday, April 19. To submit an abstract, visit go.uco.edu/igss. The conference is scheduled for Sept. 28–29, and will take place in the UCO Nigh University Center, located on Central’s campus.

The conference invites students, faculty, staff, scholars, activists and artists to propose presentations or performances in creative disciplines such as literature, theater, music, dance and visual art. All interested parties are invited to submit abstracts for papers, panels, roundtable discussions and/or poster presentations that explore issues related to women, gender and sexuality studies. Submissions from various disciplines, including social sciences, humanities, fine arts, activism and STEM fields, are encouraged. The selection committee interprets the theme broadly, embracing intersectional and interdisciplinary thinking.

This year’s keynote speaker is Anna Cox, M.F.A., author of "I Keep My Worries in My Teeth" and director of the Studio School at Oklahoma Contemporary.

Drawing from her background in photography and pedagogy, she will deliver a talk on her fiction writing practices and collaborations with artists.

Panchakot Mahavidyalaya, Purulia, is organizing a two-day seminar on 'Tales of Timelessness: Understanding the Heritage of West Bengal' from 21st and 22nd March 2024. On this occasion, we are pleased to announce a call for papers, inviting research students and independent scholars to submit their original research (300-400 words abstract) along with their bio-note to suvajit.halder@panchakotmv.ac.in.

Concept Note

Understanding/conserving heritage is more than creating museums or collecting artifacts, stories, and songs. Heritage is a living experience that weaves together the threads of our past, present, and future. It goes beyond the surface, delving into the stories, values, and legacies that shape our identities as individuals and communities.

At its core, heritage encapsulates tangible and intangible expressions of human creativity and achievement. It encompasses historical sites, cultural practices, languages, folklore, and collective memories that bind a society. Heritage is a repository of knowledge, a bridge between generations, and a testament to the diversity of human experiences.

Heritage is dynamic, evolving with time while retaining its intrinsic essence. It reflects the continuous interplay between tradition and modernity, adaptation, and preservation. Recognizing and safeguarding heritage becomes a collective responsibility as it contributes to a sense of belonging and shared identity within communities.

Moreover, understanding heritage fosters an appreciation and respect for cultural diversity. It encourages cross-cultural dialogue, allowing individuals to embrace the richness of traditions different from their own. Heritage becomes a source of inspiration, a reservoir of creativity that sparks innovation while grounding societies in their roots.

In essence, understanding heritage is an invitation to explore the roots of our existence, to appreciate the cultural mosaic that defines us. It prompts us to preserve, celebrate, and transmit our heritage to future generations, ensuring that the stories of our past continue to resonate in the present and echo into the future. Heritage is not merely a static snapshot of history; it is a vibrant, ever-unfolding narrative that invites us to connect, learn, and carry forward the legacy of our shared human experience.

Nestled in the eastern part of India, Bengal is a state that exudes cultural richness and historical significance. Many of its treasures are still unexplored but significant in understanding the richness of Bengali culture. For instance, Garh Panchakot of Purulia district, which holds immense significance in the history of this region, remains historically unexplored. Another example is Telkupi village, containing the finest and largest number of temples in one place in the Chota Nagpur circle of Bengal, unknown to many Bengalis. Moreover, the opulent tradition of handicrafts, paintings, dance, and plays in these regions remains unheard of by many scholars and the common masses. Therefore, to explore and understand the heritage of Bengal more thoroughly, we invite scholars and professionals to present their research in the seminar entitled 'Tales of Timelessness: Understanding the Heritage of West Bengal.'

Objective: 

The primary objective of this seminar is to provide a comprehensive exploration of West Bengal's heritage, shedding light on its historical, cultural, and architectural significance. Participants will gain insights into the evolution of the state's heritage and its impact on contemporary society.

 

Themes

Historical Narratives:

  • Historical events, chronology of lesser-known dynasties, epigraphic, and numismatic studies.

Cultural Narrative:

  • Exploring the vibrant festivals and traditions that define the cultural ethos of West Bengal.
  • Analyzing the role of literature, music, and performing arts in preserving and promoting cultural heritage.

Architectural Marvels:

  • Investigating the architectural heritage of West Bengal, including iconic structures, temples, and palaces.
  • Discussing the fusion of indigenous and foreign architectural styles that characterize the region.

Food/Dress/Residence:

  • Delving into the unique culinary traditions of West Bengal, including the world-famous Bengali cuisine.
  • Understanding the historical and cultural significance of traditional dishes and culinary practices.
  • Exploring diverse traditions of dresses of Bengal.
  • Different styles of houses and their ornamentation.

Craftsmanship and Handicrafts:

  • Showcasing the intricate craftsmanship and traditional handicrafts passed down through generations.
  • Discussing the role of artisans in preserving and promoting West Bengal's artistic heritage.

Socio-economic study of different heritage sites.

Exploring the possibility and making a plan to make lesser-known Heritage sites a tourist attraction.

 

Exploring the Heritage sites of Purulia with special reference to Garh Panchakot and its surrounding areas.

 

Expected Outcomes

  • Increased awareness and appreciation of West Bengal's rich heritage.
  • Creation of a platform for interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration.
  • Generation of research and documentation to contribute to the preservation of West Bengal's cultural legacy.

Free accommodation may be offered at the college hostel, subject to availability. The seminar committee can also arrange accommodation at resorts (Panchet Hill) for participants on payment. No TA will be provided to the participants.

Postcolonial Interventions invites scholarly articles for an OPEN ISSUE to be published in June 2024. As this call is being circulated, the people of Palestine continue to suffer with excruciating agonies inflicted on them by Zionist imperial aggression, right-wing forces of xenophobia, discrimination and intolerance continue to gather momentum across the world, inequality and ecological crisis continue to escalate and new forms of precarity are being constantly negotiated. 


The next issue of Postcolonial Interventions seeks to explore such issues and more based on postcolonial experiences across the world.



Submission Guidelines:
1. Articles must be original and unpublished. Submission will imply that it is not being considered for publication elsewhere.
2. Written in Times New Roman 12, double spaced with 1″ margin     on all sides, in doc/docx format.
3. Between 4000-7000 words, inclusive of all citations.
4. With in-text citations and a Works Cited list complying with        Chicago Manual of Style (author-date) specifications.
5. A separate cover page should include the author’s name,                designation, an abstract of 250 words with a maximum of 5                 keywords and a short bio-note of 50 words.
6. The main article should not in any way contain the author’s name.  Otherwise the article will not be considered.
7. Reviews also need to follow the aforementioned guidelines.            However, word limit for reviews is 1500 words.
8. The contributors are responsible for obtaining permission to        reproduce any material, including photographs and illustrations         for which they do not hold copyright.

Call for# Contributions: #Funded #Max #Weber Foundation #Conference on #Harmful #Entanglements. #Orient-Institute Istanbul, May 14th–15th, 2024.






Entanglements are the order of the day. In the last two decades or so, the notion of entanglement has not only been very popular with historians (histoire croisée, Verflechtungsgeschichte), but also on fields such as comparative literature, cultural anthropology, archeology, and some social sciences. The concept of entanglement enables researchers to avoid dealing with clearly (pre-)defined social or political entities. It has awarded researchers the opportunity to attain a freely chosen vantage point with regard to both their evidence and concepts. Finally, it has proved especially suitable for the analysis of social, intellectual and political agency and interdependencies because of the concept’s capacity to break down asymetries, dilute binaries and highlight questions of process (how?) over quiddity (what?) and cause (why?).



The conference on ‘Harmful Entanglements’ thus addresses a phenomenon caused not so much by a principal methodological flaw in the concept of entanglement. Rather, it aims to answer to the unacknowledged conditions of the concept’s ubiquity, or, with other words, by its own ‘entanglement’ in a particular political context. Arguably, the study of and the various approaches to entanglements are products of an era of run-away globalisation and the heuristic possibilities it has enabled/unleashed. Scholars also began to ask questions that, to a degree, mirror the concerns and expectations of this kind of neo-liberal instability and acceleration. While many studies of entanglement were fed by general optimism in their transformative power, significant research has also been conducted on problems created by entanglement that encompasses topics such as environmental history, international law and diplomacy, (post-) colonialism, and the position of racist and fascist cultural production in the history of modernity or the project of modernism.


By and large, however, a silent assumption has been dominant: entanglement has come to be considered a phenomenon that obeys a logic of accretion. Entanglement by default seems not to lead to disentanglement but to a new level of tighter entanglement.

The last few years with their crises of contagion, war, and economic rifts and collapses may offer a good occasion to question this assumption. It seems to be time to look at those who in the past or today reject to be entangled and at those etanglements that apparently proved detrimental. We aim to ask questions such as: What kind of entanglements have been regarded as sufficiently “bad” (harmful, exploitative, morally or legally unjustifiable, politivcally flawed, economically costly and so on) to provoke attempts at disentanglement? As dependencies (they may be understood as mutual as ever) involve power inequalities, the question of agency in disentanglements becomes crucial: What regimes of power trigger decolonialisation and neo-colonialisation processes? Do harmful entanglements lead to cultures of the vernacular, the backwater, the obscure – or at least to a longing for them? Do ever-increasing entanglements continuously diminish agency and lead to an animosity against connectedness  (as is observable in the present conjuncture of failing optimism in globalization)? Which actors are prone to fear or reject entanglements as principally dangerous or disastrous? When and why do attempts at disentanglement fail?

This year's Max Weber Foundation Conference is already the eighth such meeting organised by the Max Weber Foundation for German Humanities Institutes Abroad. The previous conferences of this format took place at the German Historical Institutes in Paris, Warsaw, Moscow, Washington, Kairo, Rome, and Tokyo. The Foundation Conference format takes up research topics from the institutes of the Max Weber Foundation and discusses them in an internationally comparative, trans- and interdisciplinary manner. The Foundation Conferences involve all of the Foundation's institutes and their partners.

The conference will take place in connection with the opening of the new building of the Orient-Institut Istanbul in the centre of Istanbul, in Galip Dede Caddesi 65, close to the Galata Tower. Keynotes will be delivered by Prof. em. Dr. Monica Juneja (Heidelberg University) and Prof. Dr. Eugene Rogan (Oxford University).

We invite papers that engage with these or related problems in the past or present and from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. Funding (travel-expenses, board and lodging) are available for participants not affiliated with the Max Weber Foundation. The language of the conference is English. A volume of contributions will be published.

Call for Papers - Indian #Folklife Journal - ‘#Translating #Texts, Translating #Cultures’-#Indian #Folklife a Quarterly quasi-research #Journal-June 2024

The process of translation and the interpretation of any given text are intimately intertwined with the notion of culture. In the past two to three decades, translation has undergone a notable transformation, emerging as a more creative and noticeably active discipline. Translations go beyond mere translation of words and sentence structures; they encapsulate ideologies, values, and ways of life specific to a particular culture. In traditional discussions on translation, the challenges, often labeled as "culture-specific," centre around crucial elements that pose intricate difficulties in conveying them with precision.




Literary translation stands out as a primary means of communication across cultures. It is imperative to acknowledge that literary texts are essentially cultural constructs, where language functions as the medium for cultural expression. Literary texts as such exhibit numerous linguistic nuances, along with reflections of social and cultural aspects of our lives. The translation of a literary text is thus no longer a mere exchange between two languages but a nuanced negotiation between two distinct cultures. The ability of culture to engage in translation is therefore a crucial aspect to be considered at this point. Cultural dynamics predominantly operate through translational activities as the incorporation of new texts is essential for cultural innovation and the recognition of its distinctiveness.  



Translation is a process for folklore ethnographic research as well. The translation of folk literature necessitates an exploration into the thought processes of the narrator, the translator, and the reader. More so in the native contexts. Clearly, these considerations merit discussion within the context of translating both texts and cultures. There appears to be an imminent need to safeguard and reserve a modest space for the translations of folk literature and folklore ethnography in this postcolonial-postmodernist era, where constant innovation arises through the lens of cultural translation. In the new century, there exists an increased understanding of the cultural significance of translated texts, especially on folk literature and folklore ethnography, in relation to their influence on the identity of the receiving culture.

CFP: Virtual International Conference on #Glitching #Comics -The #ComicsStudies Society








In her 2020 publication Glitch Feminism: A Manifesto, Legacy Russell explores the notion of “glitch-as-error with its genesis in the realm of the machinic and the digital.” With this framing, she argues that glitches might “inform the way we see the AFK [Away-From-Keyboard or real] world, shaping how we might participate in it toward greater agency for and by ourselves” (8-9). With her sights set on social systems of gender, race, and sexuality in particular, Russell asks how embodied subjects who defy patriarchal white supremacist cisheterosexist norms are positioned or appear as glitches, as errors, in digital and AFK spaces. Rather than take for granted the normative understanding of glitch-as-error, Russell argues for a feminist praxis that reconceives glitches as a form of refusal and a means by which to challenge the status quo. Russell is particularly interested in how artists record, perform, and embrace the glitch to expose our flawed social systems, explore the in-between, and “imagine new possibilities of what the body can do, and how this can work against the normative” (14). Building on Russell’s bold and necessary work, the CSS Conference Committee invites members to join us in glitching comics. What can errors in production processes of print comics reveal about systems of racialization? How might digital reading practices expose industry sexism or ableism? What do creators accomplish when they embrace glitchy aesthetics? How do comics or comics media that dwell in the in-between or sit with discomfort help us to refuse violent social norms? How do marginalized creators take advantage of systemic failures? 

Like Russell, we recognize the feedback loop between digital and AFK spaces so we encourage participants to draw on print or digital comics, comics-related media, or texts that actively blur these distinctions. The Comics Studies Society invites proposals for 15-minute individual papers, pre-formed panels, media objects (such as critical making, comics, video, Twine, or performance), and pedagogy or other workshops that engage with how comics (across forms, genres, media, experiences, regions, and cultures) disrupt the status quo.
