Call for Proposals for Special Issue -Interdisciplinary Humanities -Designing Our Future: Humanities-Centered Teaching, Learning, and Thinking in the 21st Century

 Special Issue Description

What does the future hold for the humanities? Now, perhaps more than ever, the humanities have the opportunity and the urgency to innovate and adapt to the shifting dimensions of the twenty-first century. The humanities provide valuable habits of minds and skills that prepare students for their professional and personal lives. They teach us about the human condition: how we relate to each other; how we understand and work with differing perspectives; how we express ourselves; how we act ethically; and, how we better come to know ourselves. The disciplined university has traditionally organized the humanities within majors, minors, certificates, and general education courses. This structure creates silos where subjects are taught within a particular discipline with an occasional slippage into other disciplines. With the increasing corporatization of the university and the shrinking of higher education, the humanities have become subject to market forces and student demand, positioning academics to continually demonstrate the “value” of their program, degree, or course.

 

To push against this rigid structure, some colleges and universities are being creative and innovative with the humanities. Some are trying to infuse the humanities in places where traditionally they have been absent, and some are reconceptualizing and repackaging them. For example, how do the humanities give us a roadmap to determine the ethical boundaries of the non-human, cyborgian networks of knowledge generated by artificial intelligence? Or, how does the growing emphasis on incorporating multidisciplinary “real-world” problem-solving in general education courses demonstrate the necessity of humanities thinking? 

 

Thus, this special issue which aims to highlight the strategies and unique ways in which we are adapting and responding to the shifts in higher education. What we note is rather than a focus on disciplinary content, we see an emerging emphasis on humanities thinking and its “real-world” application. We have obstacles to confront and many possibilities before us. For example, the pandemic has shown that higher education can pivot quickly, and with those changes, many of us are seeing the speed of change continue to increase amidst the challenges colleges and universities face. Do we continue to operate within and make small changes to the siloed structures that have defined the American university? Or can we imagine new configurations and ways of thinking about our disciplines, courses, and pedagogies that empower us to design our futures?  

 

Accordingly, we invite scholars to contribute essays that engage with the following questions: 

  • How do we center the humanities in interdisciplinary work through meaningful and productive collaborations?
  • How do we design humanities courses or programs that generate student interest and demonstrate their value?
  • How do we survive the shrinking of higher education amidst an unknown future?
  • In what ways can the humanities be positioned as central to institutions’ strategic priorities?
  • How can we capitalize on higher education’s emphasis on experiential learning and career preparedness to strengthen our offerings?
  • How can innovative pedagogies inform new approaches to the humanities?
  • How can online learning be leveraged to extend the reach of what the humanities tell us how to relate to another?
  • How does the growth of generative AI impact humanities education in productive, innovative ways?
  • What are institutions’ creative responses to the obstacles of interdisciplinarity?
  • How do we prepare graduate students for a higher education landscape that is unlikely to provide them with full-time employment in academia?
  • How are community colleges drawing connections between the humanities and workforce readiness?

Essay Guidelines

Essays will meet the following norms:

  • 5,000 to 7,000 words (including notes) 
  • double spaced, 12-points Times New Roman font, 1” fully-justified margins
  • adheres to latest version of The Chicago Manual of Style
  • Endnotes only (notes should show full citations followed by shortened citations for the same sources; single-spaced and 10-points Times New Roman font))
  • no bibliography
  • quotes over three lines in length need to be in a free-standing block of text with no quotation marks, indented on the left side of the block, and starting the quotation on a new line, with the entire quote indented 1/2 inch from the left margin while maintaining double-spacing;
  • permissions to reprint images and illustrations, if any, are the responsibility of the author and should be arranged for and paid before submitting the article;
  • sent electronically in MS Word file to editors

Process

Essay proposals will be evaluated on relevance to topic, originality, and clarity. Essay drafts will undergo a double-blind peer review process where reviewers will evaluate originality, clarity, and documentation, and scholarly contribution to decide if the essay is suitable for publication, in need of revision, or not publishable.

Per HERA’s website, “The Humanities Education and Research Association's Scholarly Journal: Interdisciplinary Humanities is a refereed scholarly journal, published three times a year. The journal accepts articles that deal with ‘any learning activities with content that draws upon human cultural heritage, uses methods that derive from the humanistic disciplines, and has a purpose that is concerned with human values.’ Articles dealing with the interdisciplinary humanities or humanities education at all levels (K-12, college, and adult learning) are welcome, as are creative works of poetry, fiction and non-fiction that reflect the journal's interests and the themes of specific issues.”

Call For Articles: "The Beauty of Storytelling and the Story of Beauty"-The Polish Journal of Aesthetics



We kindly invite Authors to submit proposals to a special issue of The Polish Journal of Aesthetics - "The Beauty of Storytelling and the Story of Beauty", Vol. 75 (2/2025), edited by Joanna Szczepanik (Faculty of Architecture, West Pomeranian Technological University in Szczecin, Poland) and Kalina Kukie?ko (Institute of Sociology, University of Szczecin, Poland)




This issue of The Polish Journal of Aesthetics delves into the intricate relationship between beauty and storytelling. Over a century ago, the emergence of artistic avant-gardes challenged the primacy of beauty as the paramount aesthetic value. In contemporary times, amidst the complexities of the 21st century, its interpretation and significance are contested by notions such as originality, innovation, and creativity. Furthermore, the advent and progression of new media, notably the ascent of Artificial Intelligence (AI), introduce new dimensions for scrutinizing authorship, aesthetic ideals, and the essence of art. Recognizing storytelling as a potent vehicle for comprehending the world, this issue urges authors to explore beauty as an inherent feature of narrative, encompassing both form and content, as articulated by W?adys?aw Tatarkiewicz: “whether it be color, sound, or thought.” Is there still a place for beauty in the modern world? What has become of the reverence for this once supreme value, traditionally aligned with goodness and truth in the Greek triad? A narrative infused with beauty entices, persuades, evokes emotions, resonates with experiences, and ultimately enriches our lives. This issue serves as an invitation to contemplate the current state of beauty in relation to storytelling as its fundamental aspect, and in reference to art-based research, which applies artistic methods to qualitative research. We welcome submissions representing diverse philosophical, artistic, cultural, and sociological perspectives, employing varied theoretical frameworks to engage in discourse about beauty and storytelling. Articles may explore, among other topics:

- Contemporary perspectives on beauty,
- Methods of narrating beauty and narratives about beauty,
- The beauty embedded within contemporary storytelling and narratives,
- Beauty's intersection with AI,
- Beauty as a constituent element of storytelling,
- Storytelling and aesthetic values,
- The storyteller, story, storytelling, and their audience,
- Storytelling and the world of design,
- Storytelling as an approach to aesthetic inquiry, art-based research, and qualitative research.

We also invite submissions in the form of essays, reviews, poetry, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary expressions that explore the volume’s theme from non-academic perspectives.

CFP: International Conference on The Ends and Means of Liberal Education -- Extended Call for Papers -May- 2024

May 2nd to 4th 2024

The powerful, transformative forces reshaping contemporary societies both challenge liberal education and provide it with new opportunities. The Ends and Means of Liberal Education in the Twenty-First Century conference will explore the relevance and possibilities of undergraduate liberal education given the advent of artificial intelligence, digital media, political polarisation, cultural fragmentation, and growing economic and social instability.

Proposals are invited for papers on any aspect of the nature and provision of liberal education. Broad theoretical reflections, particular case studies, and reasoned, evidenced polemical presentations are all welcomed. The conference will be a forum for voices from disciplines across the humanities, natural and social sciences, and professions.

The conference keynote speaker will be Professor Henry Giroux, Chair for Scholarship in the Public Interest​ at Macmaster University and the Paulo Freire Distinguished Scholar in Critical Pedagogy.  Professor Giroux is a leading exponent of critical pedagogy and author of more than 70 books including the influential University in Chains (2007), Neoliberalism's War on Higher Education (2014, 2020), and Pedagogy of Resistance: Against Manufactured Ignorance (2022).

CFP International Conference “Literary Recycling for Postdigital Readers.” A Digital Epistemology for the Recycling of Literatures?: Digital Literary Studies under Debate -Sep 26 - 27, 2024


Now that we live immersed in the postdigital era without hardly noticing it and that any given cultural object seems susceptible to be recycled by a digital technology available to anyone, it is time to ask ourselves about the underlying conceptual and methodological models that these technologies impose.

What kind of cultural recycling (of reading, of literatures, of literary histories) are the so-called Digital Humanities proposing? We observe that the construction of digitised corpora, the essentially quantitative and probabilistic methods, and the capacity of machines to quantify data propose a model of objectivity, a single epistemology that seems to clash with plural hermeneutics.

If these methods make it possible to look at the past through new lenses, how can we do so without forgetting the interstices and ambiguities that they leave out?  Can phenomena of the past, such as the transcultural or transtemporal interweavings and the mediality of other eras (in contrast to the present one) be helpful to understand more precisely the mediatisation and recycling of literature today? Particularly, those mediations and recycling carried out by Digital Humanities’ methods?

It is not a new model, it is an old one: we only have to take a look at its history (its promises can already be found in nineteenth-century positivism) or at the institutionalisation of Digital Humanities as a disciplinary field, which tends to be conservative in its principles and hierarchies. Nevertheless, this model is considered innovative in terms of its creation, modification, and introduction of a socio-cultural use in literary studies. This is indeed why we must question the epistemological bias of this model. In culture, in literatures, biases are observable. We need to critically question the specific characteristics of digital methodologies in the field of literary studies and their underlying conceptualisations and epistemologies, since they can guide future approaches, as well as point to its limitations and blind spots: we need Critical Digital Humanities.

Contributions may focus on one of the following aspects:

- Theories and methods of literary analysis in Digital Humanities: limitations and how to overcome them.

- Methods and applications of the digital analysis of literary corpora and texts as forms of cultural recycling: underlying conceptualisations.

- Analysis of mixed methods that blend previous literary-theoretical traditions and procedures that are specific to the Digital Humanities: epistemological foundations.

- Analysis of processes of cultural and transtemporal interweaving in literatures using digital methodologies: possibilities and limitations.

- Macro-recycling of literary histories: new focuses, blind spots.

The languages of the conference will be Spanish, English and German. Guest lectures will be translated into Spanish.

Key speakers: Anita Traninger (Freie Universität Berlin) and Rabea Kleymann (Technische Universität Chemnitz)

Interested applicants can send their proposals including name, institution, email address, title of the proposal, keywords and an abstract of at least 250 words to reclit-ji@ucm.es by March 15, 2024. The committee's decision on the acceptance of the proposals will be notified within two months.

A monographic publication will be released with the contributions selected by the scientific committee.

CFP: Special Issue Call for Papers 'The Human and the Machine: AI and the Changing World'-2024






If we are to believe the entertainment media, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is destined to go rogue and take over the world, destroying humanity as we know it. In reality, the growing accessibility of AI is seeing its use normalised and it is becoming a useful tool to improve and alter society. Artificial Intelligence has been an area of research since the 1950s and hinges on machine functions that learn from humans or independently. Despite its long history, contemporary advancements in AI systems, like Midjourney and Chat GPT, are fuelling fresh discussions about its pervasive impact on diverse industries, from healthcare and communication to engineering and art.


Existing research has documented AI's capabilities in various sectors. It can synthesise big data, enhance creativity, streamline production, and personalise content. For instance, platforms like Chat GPT have proven effective in educational settings, while DALL-E 2 has expedited the creation and deployment of advertising materials. In the business domain, data analysts leverage AI for consumer behaviour analysis, including product reviews and purchase intentions. For public relations professionals, AI automates routine tasks like media list creation and meeting scheduling, thereby enhancing efficiency. Overall, AI has wide applicability across industries with obvious advantages.

However, AI is not without its challenges. It has been critiqued for potentially causing job losses, breaching privacy, infringing copyrights, and perpetuating false information. There's a growing concern that as machines take on roles in cultural production, even when working alongside their human counterparts, issues around human agency and rights come into focus, particularly when AI systems are perceived as biased or lacking a nuanced understanding of global contexts. For instance, in journalism, concerns have been raised that using AI will compromise norms and values, while in advertising and public relations, the move to using virtual influencers has posed issues of inauthenticity. Such ethical concerns continue to be raised around professional practice and the use of AI, and therefore, pose challenges to the willingness of people to embrace AI.

While the public's response to AI has often been tepid due to its complexities and uncertainties, its undeniable influence on language and social relationships underscores its relevance in communication research. It is against this backdrop we extend an invitation for contributions to this special issue that considers the relationship between artificial intelligence and communication. The focus is on how AI is influencing the communication and media industries, ranging from public relations and journalism to marketing and entertainment media (e.g. screen production, artistic practice, podcasting). We aim to address questions such as, how is AI impacting the production and consumption of media content, how might AI shape communication and culture, is AI displacing human resources, and what impact will AI have on authentic human interaction.

Topics in the special issue may include (but are not limited to):

• AI and authentic human interaction
• AI and journalism/public relations/advertising/marketing (or other communication industry)
• AI and personalization of media content
• Chatbots and virtual humans
• AI and cultural development
• AI, diversity, and inclusion
• AI media production and/or consumption practices

His expertise in digital media spans visual communication, UI/UX design, technology-enhanced learning, and the strategies that underpin the use of digital media.


Dr Angelique Nairn is an Associate Professor in the School of Communication Studies (SCS). She is also the Associate Head of School for Research. Angelique has been involved in a myriad of research projects that have hinged on organisational communication, identity construction, rhetoric, and/or the creative industries. Call for Participants: Workshop(#Free #Travel #Bursaries) on Mapping the #Holocaust-Institute of Historical Research, Senate House, London

 Call for Participants

The University of Manchester’s Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute, the University of Oxford's Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies, and the Institute of Historical Research invite applications for a one-day workshop on Mapping the Holocaust. In examining the routes taken by people, objects, and ideas during and after the Holocaust, this workshop highlights the connections and diversions (geographically, temporally, topically, etc.) when attempting to 'map the Holocaust'.

This workshop asks participants to challenge how they conceptually view their own work and how historiography has understood the physicality and mapping of the Holocaust. Moving beyond transit routes and migration, this workshop considers both empirical and theoretical approaches to mapping, asking: ‘What movements of the Holocaust have been under-explored?’ ‘How do we examine issues of returns/remaining?’ ‘What role does mapping have in shaping Holocaust memory, representation, and research?’ ‘How can we establish temporal or geographical boundaries when mapping the Holocaust?’

This workshop, open to PhD students and early career researchers, offers participants an opportunity to share works in progress in a collaborative and engaging environment. We will actively examine how our research relates to methods of mapping movement, gaining a further understanding of research currently being conducted within the discipline. As the purpose of the workshop is to re-investigate traditional notions of mapping the Holocaust, we invite applicants to bring their current work – regardless of whether it directly involves mapping or movement – to the workshop. The sessions will then be spent actively interrogating how the applicants’ work engages with or is influenced by movement and Holocaust mapping.

Suggested areas of interest include (but are not limited to):

  • Human movement (refugees, military forces, anticipated journey making, forced movement/displacement)
  • Movement of objects (letters, photographs, suitcases, etc.)
  • Movement of finances (humanitarian aid, religious financing, private funding)
  • Mapping memory (museums, memorials, media)
  • Mapping knowledge (i.e. how can we trace movements of what was (un)known?, through newspapers, letters, etc.)
  • Direction and time (returning, remaining, pre- and post-war movement)
  • Mapping itself (handwritten maps, digital maps, maps from the event and after)

Call for Papers: Special Issue on “Kindness in Higher Education: Fostering the Human(e) Element of Teaching and Learning” - Journal of Applied Learning & Teaching (ISSN 2591-801X) (Academic Journal - Special Issue)



Introduction

The Journal of Applied Learning & Teaching (JALT) is pleased to announce a forthcoming special issue on “Kindness in Higher Education: Fostering the Human(e) Element of Teaching and Learning”.

This issue aims to explore the essential aspects of Garrison’s (2016) Community of Inquiry model, with a specific focus on the three forms of ‘presence’: social, cognitive, and teaching. We seek to investigate how these elements play a pivotal role in fostering productive and meaningful learning experiences in diverse higher education settings while embracing and nurturing the humane aspect of education.

Theme and Scope
As the landscape of higher education undergoes a transition back to full on-campus, online, and hybrid teaching environments, the challenge of cultivating purposeful pedagogies, enhancing student engagement, and implementing authentic assessment methodologies becomes ever more critical. This special issue is designed to synthesise contemporary research, insightful analysis, debates, and provocations centred around the theme of fostering humane, socially present learning environments.


Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
  •  Social presence and learning outcomes: Exploring the impact of social presence on student engagement, collaboration, and learning outcomes in various higher education settings.
  •  Cognitive presence and pedagogical strategies: Investigating the relationship between cognitive presence and effective pedagogical approaches that promote deep learning and critical thinking.
  • Facilitating teaching presence in hybrid and online settings: Examining the role of teaching presence in hybrid and online courses, and its impact on the quality of instruction and student learning experiences.
  •  Authentic assessment techniques: Presenting innovative assessment methods that align with authentic learning experiences, promoting a deeper understanding of course content.
  •  Humanising learning environments: Discussing strategies for creating inclusive and empathetic learning spaces that value and respect individual learner identities and experiences.
  •  Student perspectives on social and cognitive presence: Inquiring into students’ perspectives on the importance of social and cognitive presence in their learning journey.
  •  Leadership in higher education and learning environment design: Analysing the role of institutional leaders in fostering socially and cognitively rich learning settings.

Submission Guidelines

We invite submissions from teaching practitioners, academic scholars, leaders in higher education, and graduate research students. Manuscripts should be original and unpublished works adhering to the JALT’s guidelines for authors and the article template.


Please ensure that your submission addresses the theme and scope of the special issue. All manuscripts will undergo a rigorous double-blind peer-review process to ensure the highest quality and relevance of the published articles.

CFP: Two Day Symposium on #Routes beyond #Roots: #Indian #Performing #Arts and Virtual Culture(s) Dublin, Ireland- June 2024



Over the last number of years, Indian classical dance traditions have seen major shifts in terms of practice, pedagogy, and performance, both ‘at home’ in India and in diaspora contexts. These changes have been intensified most recently by two primary and co-related phenomena; the global adoption of specific algorithmic social media and streaming platforms, and lockdown restrictions imposed in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. What happens to the embodied physical presence on virtual platforms? How has the format of the art form been modified to fit in digital spaces? What do these transformations mean for the future of the dance forms? How are socio-political issues embedded and addressed in such spaces?

Recognising these mediations on digital dancing bodies and the scope of such largely unexplored digital interventions in Indian classical dance, we call for a symposium to contribute to a growing body of dance research. This two-day symposium to be held on the 13th and 14th of June 2024 and hosted by University College Dublin (Ireland), aims to bring scholar-practitioners, artists, and researchers working with Indian dance together in order to explore these recent transformations. Dr Prarthana Purkayastha (Royal Holloway University of London), whose crucial work revolves around the intersections of Indian dance studies and transnationalism, identity, diaspora, and decoloniality, will deliver the keynote address.


We invite presentations, performances, and discussions that will help us to (re)imagine and (re)interpret Indian dance as it exists in digital cultures, both in India and in the diaspora. While we are particularly interested in the critical evaluation of Indian dance traditions transformed by or with social media platforms, our definition of digital culture is intentionally broad and we call for scholars working across disciplines to explore movement from various methodological perspectives. By facilitating multiple modes of thinking and learning together, we hope to encourage new pathways of engagement with an ever-growing and transnational Indian culturalscape. We invite proposals for one hour panels or roundtables (3-4 people), or single 30-minute presentations, film screenings, lecture-demonstration and/or workshops from scholar-practitioners, artists, and researchers.
