CFP: Virtual International Conference C4P - "Comprehending #Comics: Exploring Methodologies and Approaches to #ComicStudies in History and the Social Sciences": September 8-9, 2024

Interest in comic studies have generated wide and varied interests from an exploration of visual language and narrative in sequential art to the use of technologies in comics, to considerations current questions in both contemporary society and history. These have led to fruitful research which cross disciplines and produced diverse and complex scholarship. Richard Scully have written extensively on political cartoons and their relationship with imperialism and colonialism. Amy Matthewson’s Cartooning China examined the British popular satirical magazine Punch and situated the series of cartoons of China and Chinese people within their geopolitical frameworks. Sheena Howard and Ronald Jackson’s Black Comics: Politics of Race and Representation brought together a range of critical essays exploring contributions of Black graphic artists. Collections such as Drawing the Past Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 (2022), edited by Dorian Alexander, Michael Goodrum, and Philip Smith, brought a range of scholars to unite around the broad theme of the historical imagination in American popular media. 

There is still an evolving consensus on which the methodologies that scholars specialized in fields of history and social sciences could use when engaging with comics. Often, research focused on comics-formatted primary sources is pigeonholed into literary study, or in other cases the linguistic framework of describing and analyzing comics fails to translate to a discussion of material culture. As the range of demonstrated methodologies is vast, and as the advancement of comics-based research offers new potential for the study of history and the social sciences, it is a crucial time to reflect and take stock of current practice and possible future directions. 

We are interested in all aspects of comics-format works, comics and graphic novels, and methodologies and themes that might address (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Representation in comics
  • The challenges of comics-based research studies as applied to the study of history
  • Historical aspects of visualities and comics in particular
  • The future of comics in research
  • Archeology and comics
  • Ancient and medieval history in comics
  • The effects of digital tools in comic studies
  • Comics and the politics of methodology – race, gender, sexuality, class, etc.
  • The transnational, transcultural, and/or interdisciplinary nature of comic studies
  • Teaching history with or through comics
  • Teaching comics-based research methods
  • Comics in memory studies
  • Tensions and concordances between art history and history of comics and graphic novels

We are now accepting proposals for papers (20 minutes) and panels (of 2 or 3 papers). Graduate students are also invited to submit a poster, which will be displayed online for the duration of the conference. The poster section will enable asynchronous comments, and a presentation session where participants give a short 3-5 minute summary of the poster content. This will be an online conference hosted by the Comics Lab at Palacky University, Czech Republic. Online networking and socializing will be enabled through various platforms. Given the international spread of contributors, participant time zones will be considered when scheduling panels. The conference will take place September 8-9, 2024.

CFA: International Conference on "Linking Latitudes: #Postcolonialism and After"- 3-5 Feb, 2024 #Swami #Vivekananda University Organized in collaboration with #Oxford University #Press, #Cambridge University #Press, #Taylor & #Francis (#Routledge) and #SAGE




This international conference intends to bring together emerging insights from across the humanities and social sciences to highlight how postcolonial studies is being transformed by increasingly influential and radical approaches to nature, matter, subjectivity, human agency,  politics, literature and cultural practice. These include decolonial studies, political ontology, political ecology, indigeneity, posthumanism, transnationalism and so on. It therefore demands new ontological discourses that will reflexively situate our new intellective challenges within the long histories of theoretical narratives. It is time now we had devised and developed interdisciplinary episteme to think  through global, critical, transnational and empirical phenomena that include city spaces and urbanisms in the Global North and South, food politics, colonial land use, cultural and cosmic representation in film, theatre, and poetry, nation building, the Anthropocene, materiality,  pluriversality,  cosmopolitan world views etc  Arif  Dilrik therefore ironically quipped in The Postcolonial Aura: Third World Criticism in the Age of Global Capitalism: “Postcolonial begins …when Third World intellectuals have arrived in First World academe…then perhaps it ends when every department has hired a postcolonialist”.

Already there are multiple critical voices in this direction. There are dramatic suggestions that postcolonialism is over and it has been replaced by new critical discourses. In 2007, PMLA published an Editor’s Column provocatively entitled “The End of Postcolonial Theory”. We may also  refer to certain critical works, such as Hamid Dabashi’s The Arab Spring: The End of Postcolonialism ( ZED Books, London, 2012), Jane Hiddleston’s Writing After Postcolonialism (Bloomsbury, 2017), or Patrick Chabal’s The End of Conceit: Western Rationality after Postcolonialism (ZED Books, London, 2012).





This conference will be attended by Prof. Bill Ashcroft, Prof. Paul Sharrad, Prof. Helen Pringle and other experts from the field.

Under the  rubric of new shifting voices, we intend to focus on, though not strictly limited to,  the following areas:

  • Global South and the postcolonial aftermath
  • African postcolonial Negotiations
  • Nationalism to Transnationalism

University of Toronto Quarterly (UTQ) is currently seeking submissions. Established in 1931, UTQ publishes innovative and exemplary scholarship from all areas in the humanities. The journal welcomes articles, in English or French, on art and visual culture, gender and sexuality, history, literature and literary studies, music, philosophy, theory, theatre and performance, religion, and other areas of the humanities not listed here. As an interdisciplinary journal, UTQ favours articles that appeal to a scholarly readership beyond the specialists of a given discipline or field. The editorial board is especially interested, although not exclusively, in research that addresses topics of particular relevance to Canada. UTQ is therefore enthusiastic about submissions in Asian Canadian Studies, Black Canadian Studies, Canadian Literature, Canadian History, Canadian Studies, Diaspora Studies, and Indigenous Studies. The journal, more broadly, embraces research that engages interdisciplinary sites of scholarly inquiry, such as Affect Studies, Black Studies, Critical Disability Studies, Critical Race Studies, Digital Humanities, Environmental Humanities, Media Studies, Medical Humanities, Sound Studies, Transgender Studies, and emergent fields within the humanities. UTQ is published by the University of Toronto Press.

Submissions should normally be between 7,500 and 12,500 words in length inclusive of footnotes and bibliographic material. Additionally, all submissions should be accompanied by an abstract (150-250 words). UTQ’s house style is based upon the MLA Handbook (7th edition), so please format submissions in accordance with MLA bibliographic guidelines. Substantive or discursive amplification should appear in judiciously selected footnotes. All text, including footnotes and Works Cited, should be double-spaced. Please do not justify right margins.

UTQ does not accept research that has already been published, nor does the journal accept submissions currently under consideration elsewhere. The journal does not publish poetry or fiction.

Please anonymize submissions by removing all self-identifying information from the article, including acknowledgements and self-citations (reference your own scholarship as you would any other scholar). When saving the file, remove all personal information from the file on save.

UTQ commissions external reports to assess the quality of each submission. The journal receives numerous submissions and only submissions that the editorial board deems most appropriate for the journal, and most likely to receive recommendations to publish from experts, are sent out for peer review. The review process is doubly anonymous. Authors should expect to receive a response in the form of an editor’s report that collates relevant and useful information drawn from 2 to 3 external reports alongside the internal comments of the editorial board. Peer review takes approximately three to four months.

Call For Papers: Special Issue – #Queerness as Strength- Journal- University of Warwick



The marginalisation of LGBTIQA+ people remains a purposeful act of successive governments, institutions and individuals. The outcome has been poorer health outcomes, limited political participation, higher incarceration rates, and increased inequality and violence globally.

However, amidst this crisis LGBTIQA+ people have also created and maintained ways and means of survival. While being forced to the margins and away from the centre, queer theories and practices have emerged that challenge not only our own marginalisation but also consistently queery and question why human life is how it is. Whether surviving epidemics, persisting for equality in the law, or resisting assimilation, the power of LGBTIQA+ people is rarely collected in and across higher education disciplines. And, although often erased, a rich and vibrant life lives on in zines, the arts, the development of technologies and medicines, and in the pursuit of joy so each generation lives a life better than the one preceding it. Truly, queerness is a strength of which many should be enviable, and it deserves to be in the highest echelons of knowledge as any other discipline or practice.

This special issue aims to collect experiences, thoughts and approaches that apply queerness as a strength across any and all disciplines of practice. Ultimately, this issue aims to offer answers to the question, ‘how can the power of queers benefit wider society?’ From medicine to mathematics, to community organising and pedagogies, through to technologies and the arts, queer strengths have always improved how people live, work, connect and persist.

Paper themes may include, but are not limited to:
  • Queer informed improvements to methods and methodologies
  • Queer approaches to strengthen data collection and analysis
  • The application of queer perspectives and experiences into and across disciplines traditionally void of queer strengths
  • Commentary and ethnographies on lived/living experience of the queer researcher/practitioner/student
  • Experiences written from global majority country citizens
  • Indigenous and First Peoples perspectives
  • Perspectives of those who live or practice an intersectional queer experience
  • In/Justice in research, education and/or other institutions
  • Survival, pain, trauma, rejection and/or loss

To further the discourse and propagate related knowledge Monash University has partnered with the University of Warwick’s interdisciplinary open-access journal Exchanges (exchanges.warwick.ac.uk) to produce a special issue based around these themes. The issue, anticipated for publication in 2025, aims to contain a range of papers from scholars around the globe.

Expressions of Interest
Therefore, we invite initial expressions of interest for articles related to these themes. Expressions should contain the following information:Proposed paper title & anticipated format[1]
An outline abstract (50-200 words)
4-6 topic keywords or phrases
Contributors’ names, email addresses & associated institutions
An optional expression of interest form may be downloaded on the journal site.
